Paramount Home Entertainment is once again doubling up with its Feb. 6 release of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, the $170 million-grossing sequel to 2005’s Madagascar.

Both the DVD and the Blu-ray Disc version of the animated film will come with an entirely new companion piece: two all-new, never-before-seen animated adventures from Nickelodeon’s new “The Penguins of Madagascar” TV series.

The additional program will come on a second disc as part of the “Move It! Move It! Double DVD Pack,” while on the Blu-ray Disc edition it will be included on the same disc as the film.

DreamWorks chief Ann Daly said the decision to offer consumers a “sneak peak” of the new TV series came after a similar strategy with Kung Fu Panda paid off handsomely. Sales of the “Pandemonium Double Pack,” which included the direct-to-video companion film Secrets of the Furious Five, accounted for nearly 30% of total unit sales, at a significantly higher price point of nearly $25.

Kung Fu Panda wound up the top-selling animated DVD of 2008, with estimated unit sales of 6.7 million units, according to Home Media Magazine market research.

Single discs of new releases typically sell for about $15 their first week in stores.

In this economy, the fact that we sold nearly 30% of our volume in that configuration, and at that price point, is great,” Daly said. “It shows consumers are looking for value, not just the lowest price.”

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Blu-ray Specs and Cover Art

Dreamworks continues their practice of waiting until the last possible moment to announce big releases by informing us Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has been cleared to take off on Blu-ray and DVD on February 6.

A quick check of the calendar shows February 6 is a Friday which means Dreamworks is pleased with how their late 2008 weekend Blu-ray Disc releases have fared.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. We hope D-BOX will be available at some point since a Motion Code track was created for the first Madagascar, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Two Blu-ray exclusive bonus features are included in an extensive collection packed with featurettes, music videos and Easter Eggs. The complete list plays out as follows.

Filmmakers' Commentary
The Animators' Corner Commentary (Blu-ray exclusive)
Trivia Track (Blu-ray exclusive)
It's a Family Affair: The Cast of Escape 2 Africa (HD)
The Making of Escape 2 Africa (HD)
Crash Landing (HD)
African Adventure (HD)
Jambo Jambo: Swahili Speak (HD)
The Bronx Zoo: Madagascar (HD)
Popcorn Panic (#101) (HD)
Featurette: Gone in a Flash (#103) (HD)
Music Videos: "Move It, Move It," "Big and Chunky," "She Loves Me," "Alex's Dance Off," "Sing Along," "DWA Jukebox" (HD)
Test Flight of Air Penguin Game
Easter Eggs: Move It, Move It, Hock Shop, Julien's Birthday, Tug of War, Fully Armed, No Thanks, I'm Stuffed

We expect Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa to retail for $39.98. Actual pricing will be passed along with Amazon.com pre-order information once available.

I just rented the first one and watched for the first time on Tuesday. I felt it was worth a rental, but did not hold up to many of the other Dreamworks titles like the Shrek titles and Kung Fu Panda.
