So let me ask the obvious question. Should it be approved? I would think it would be unforgivably hypocritical to say that the combo disc was better for consumers than BD and then refuse to allow or hope for the same set up for the only surviving HD format.

If combo discs were the pinnacle of consumer first, then so are these BD/DVD discs. If this pans out as feasible, it should be whole heartedly embraced.

As long as these discs don't have the same problems that HD DVD combos (those flipper discs) had, I'd be in favor of it. But would it work in all blu-ray players? Would the DVD layer not work in a blu-ray player? A BD-50 combo disc would be preferred.

First Hybrid Blu-ray Planned for Release

Posted December 19, 2008 11:49 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc Japanese optical disc manufacturer Infinity has announced the first Blu-ray release which makes use of a hybrid Blu-ray/DVD release. Due to hit store shelves on February 18th, 'Code Blue' will feature four hybrid discs, which feature a single Blu-ray layer (25GB) and two DVD layers (9GB) on the same side of the disc.

The disc has been approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), but has not been certified by the DVD Forum due to compatibility issues with some DVD players. The company tested the disc on 64 different players - including PC drives as well as standalone DVD and Blu-ray Disc players - and saw 100% compatibility, so the issue seems to be rare.

Infinity has also developed a 50GB version which they are now in the process of getting certified by the BDA. It will be interesting to see if the technology gets adopted for any major Hollywood releases in the future.

DVD Forum stance: "BD does not exist. We will deny all knowledge of this non-existent format you speak of...."

To me, it reads as the DVD forum is playing sour grapes a bit. But then, who cares if they certify it at all?

I'm waiting for all the combo fanboys to chime in about how great this would be if it was approved. "This is going to do so much for HDM adoption." Somehow I expect this however: "Consumers...PS3...PS3....BDA...PS3...HD DVD was the only chance...because of...PS3...PS3...Sony monopoly...PS3 sales tanking...PS3...tiny niche....PS3..sucks."

Oh no ... More crap inspired by HD DUD.

First we get picture in picture now this.

Oy.

If something is coming to Blu Ray .... There is no point in having a DVD version. That's the dumbest thing about this idea but Blu Ray seems to get every dumb aspect of HD DUD ported over....

Three seperate issues. Floor space is like gold. Duplicate title in DVD and BD is expensive for retailers and content producers.

Second issue is even with houses with a BD player, there will often be DVD players in other rooms. A combo disc would make the decission to buy much easier for some people.

Third is having the DVD layers solve the issue of digital copy and would make it much easier to transition completely out of DVD production.

When you have kids and a DVD player in the car, you will understand.

My kids have a DVD player in the car.

(I have 3 kids and 2 cars.. one portable player.)

But,... All those pixar and disney DVD's that I already have and hope to replace on Blu soon will do them fine for car trips until they manage to load up ipods to use instead.

My Blu's are not going on car trips even though they have great scratch resistant coating. I will keep all my kids DVDs and they are getting an ipod this year for x-mass so I'm sure soon they will want to be using that with digital copies.

I would only be interested in these discs if they did not add to the cost of the movie (which I doubt) or if it were for a kids movie. I doubt I will ever watch the DVD version of any movie if I have the BD version unless it is a kids movie. And even then, with the digital copy, I am set most of the time.
