Arrow Cheap Blu-ray Players: A Concern for PS3?

Quote:
One of the big selling points early in the PlayStation 3's lifespan has been its inclusion of a Blu-ray Disc drive. Although DVD still far outpaces the Blu-ray format in home-video sales and mainstream adoption, the PS3 was largely responsible for Sony's proprietary high-definition format beating out Samsung and Microsoft's HD-DVD in the now-defunct HD format wars.
Analysts industry-wide have credited the PS3 with Blu-ray's success, and in fact, the PS3 remains the best-selling "Blu-ray player" on the market. But that may soon change -- and it may do so as early as this holiday season -- begging the question of whether Sony should be concerned moving into 2009 and a down economy.

The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) released today a list of Blu-ray Disc players that will be available this holiday season ranging from $300 to below $200. The full list of these players is included below, complete with links to all of them at Amazon.com, if you want to take advantage of the new prices.

With consumers about to see cheap Blu-ray players, will Sony's PS3 sales take a hit? Not necessarily. The PS3's Blu-ray drive will certainly become less of a focus, but since that aspect of the hardware has driven sales for two years, it's time for Sony to downplay the BD drive to begin with. Instead, Sony will need to focus on exclusive games, a facet of the PS3 that is just now picking up.

In a sense, the announcement of these cheap Blu-ray players is perfectly timed for Sony. For starters, any resulting increase in Blu-ray adoption will bring the technology more mainstream awareness, which can only benefit Sony. But more important, Sony is finally in a place to tout its first-party lineup, with games such as Little Big Planet, Resistance 2 and MotorStorm 2 already out, and titles like Killzone 2 and PlayStation Home coming soon. In other words, the transition to hearing Sony talk more about games than Blu-ray Disc is coming anyway, almost as if Sony's first-party studios knew the inexpensive Blu-ray players were coming.

The cheap Blu-ray players that the Digital Entertainment Group identified span multiple manufacturers, some of which have or will have several models below $300 this holiday season. Check them out; if you hover over the links below, you should get a thumbnail image of what each Blu-ray player looks like.

Good post Bravestime I disagree with the article though I mean yeah sure the players are going to be cheaper than the ps3 but the ps3 is more than just a blu-ray player its a gaming console too so it should be 100 more then the players and since it never hurt before compared to the blu-ray players vs the ps3 I bet it will be ok. I like the article though and thanks for it.

DEG Suggests BD Players For The Holidays

Quote:
By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 11/19/2008 10:09:00 AM
Los Angeles — The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has compiled a list of some of the most aggressively priced Blu-ray Disc players that will be available this holiday shopping season.

The list features players that are retailing for between $300 and “under $200.”

A study conducted by the DEG earlier this fall found that 60 percent of HDTV owners said the major reason why they don’t yet own a Blu-ray player was because the players were too expensive. Given the latest product introductions, consumers can now purchase a set-top player from a wide variety of retail and online outlets at affordable prices.

“Blu-ray Disc players deliver the highest quality in both picture and sound and offer film lovers the ultimate home-entertainment experience,” said Amy Jo Smith, DEG executive director. “With inexpensive Blu-ray players now widely available, Blu-ray becomes the ideal attachment for every HDTV.”

The DEG said entry-level Blu-ray Disc players are available from a variety of leading consumer electronics manufacturers, including:

Magnavox (NB500MG9), Panasonic (DMP-BD30), Panasonic (DMP-BD35), Philips (BDP7200), Samsung (BD-P1000, BD-P1200 and BD-P1500), Sharp (BD-HP2OU and BDHP21U), Sony (BDP-BX1, BDP-S300, BDP-S301 and BDP-S350) and Sylvania (NB500SL9, NB501SL9).

Concern for PS3?

Maybe a year or two ago, today? Nah. It won't stop what growth the PS3 has in it. If anything it will make BD seem more accessible for the entire house.

I think this is just the natural progression of BD. There was allways going to be a point where the players were better value than the PS3, even if it has took a while to get there . The PS3's main purpose is supposedly to play games after all!

Agreed. I reluctantly bought a PS3 as my main BD player about 1.5 years ago and it turned out to be a good decision. Now? I would probably get an SAL player, but I am a cost conscious type of guy

Also agree. As in all electronics, prices drop. BD players are no exception, as we are seeing now. BD SALs will be the primary blu-ray player.

You guys crack me up

But since you never read what I say, there's just no point commenting.

So you think they're going to sell 4 Million BD SAL's this Christmas? If not, then I guess the PS3 remains the primary BD player out there for a while...

You should seek help with your PS3 issues. It is a great piece of equipment and will remain popular. It is no longer the cheapest or maybe even the best player for persons only interested in BD playback. What is so hard about this concept to understand. When decent BD players were $400-500 and the PS3 $400 you had some sort of case about the PS3 propping up BD. Now that good 2.0 SALs can be had all day long for <$250 your arguments are really starting to look even more foolish than usual.
