Default Australia (&Germany): Blu ray Sales Start To Wobble

Quote:
......In recent days in Australia several Blu ray device manufacturers including Sony and Panasonic have dropped the price of their Blu ray players following the launch of a new generation $199 Toshiba DVD upscaler.

GFK claim that initially Blu ray sales seemed to meet expectations, following the end of the format war, with sales of Blu ray players increasing by more than 50% in early 2008 however despite this boost sales did not continue to rise and have now moved into decline vs the early sales success.

September saw another turnaround, when sales figures increased by up to 27% compared to August, however sales in volume terms still remain low. Nevertheless, due to decreasing prices of Blu-Ray Players and Discs there should be further positive development in this market. ......

Seems we can copy and paste the Australian situation to Germany as well:

Quote:
........
Even though the format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray came to an end in February this year and despite the fact that around one third of German households are equipped with HD-Ready TVs, sales of Blu-Ray Players in Germany continue to fall short of industry estimates.

Initially sales figures seemed to meet expectations, when, following the end of the format war, sales units of Blu-Ray Players increased by more than 50% in March compared to the previous month according to GfK Retail and Technology. Nevertheless, this boost did not continue into April and sales in fact returned to a slight decrease in the following period.

September saw another turnaround, when sales figures increased by up to 27% compared to August, however sales in volume terms still remain below 10.000 units per month. Nevertheless, due to decreasing prices of Blu-Ray Players and Discs (more than half of the Blu-Ray Players sold on the market were sold for less than 300 Euros and some movies in Blu-Ray format are already sold for less than 15 Euros) there should be further positive development in this market.

I was in my local AV megastore the otherday and you'd think Blu ray was the biggest thing. HUGE posters/displays very prominently displayed in the main area. I was a little shocked actually.

I wonder how much of this is economy driven, and how much is based on the current limited appeal/apathy for HDM in general? I think making big posters, etc. is good and the "in your face" approach will likely make many people feel "left out" eventually if they do not buy into it. I seem to remember that being a big part of the approach used with SD DVD back in the day, so it appears to be they are taking this from the SD DVD play book.

BD player prices dropping should help overcome part of the poorer economy aspect, but the studios need to figure that out now too IMO. If Ferrari started having huge ads and saturated the market could they ever come close to the same market levels as Toyota or Chevy at the higher prices?

Roberto
I'd say the Moon is having just about the same effect as the XDE player on BD sales.

Why is there a lot of water in the BD players? Does a full moon change how BDs play?

It looks like you have figured out the XDE's effect on BD sales.

You can buy XDE players outside of the US ? They certainly are being marketed about as well as HD DVD was in the UK. I certainly highly doubt that specific player is responsible for more than about 2 lost Blu-ray sales worldwide inc Super XP
