No PS3 pricecut for Christmas, says Sony

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has restated that hopeful gamers will not see a PlayStation 3 price cut this year and that the console is a "very good value proposition".

"The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas?'" Hirai added. "When you really compare apples to apples, then I think we have a very good value proposition."

Sony's decision to not cut the price of their console for the holiday season could put them under pressure from Microsoft which has recently cut the price across the board for their rival Xbox 360 console. The current global economic downturn could also put added pressure on Sony.

Hirai believes the videogame market will do just fine even with the economic downturn. "As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries," he said but also added, "we're getting to the point where price becomes more important".

Without dropping the price however, Sony has added more value to its PS3 line by selling an 80GB model with a free game for the same price as the currently priced 40GB model.

I think the added value of the new 80GB versus the 40GB is minimal. The new 80GB cannot play PS1 or PS2 games and it has no compatibility for SACD or DVD-A. So all we have is 40GB extra hard drive space, which is nearly dirt cheap nowadays anyway. Is Sony including a decent game with this new 80GB or something they can lose money on?

Haha. You know what this means.. Pricecut is coming. Sony did the exact same thing with the last PS3 pricecut. It is good to keep your competition guessing

Didn't Sony also say we would not see Blu-Ray players this year for $299 or less from them?

Actually, the new 80GB "Core" does still play PS1 games.

I'm with ack_bak on this one, I think we'll see "bundles" or deals by retailers over a straight out price cut.

I've read about the Uncharted bundle, but its $499 - Uncharted Game, Spider-Man 3 movie (or some other movie), second controller, and a 160GB PS3.

There are still people on forums speculating PS2 emulation will come via full software. But if playing PS2 games is at all important I say track down a 20/60/80GB model that can play them now before they are all gone.

I thought the same thing when I saw this.

No wonder they are expecting a great Q4, they're going to have a huge price cut.

Well . . . . that one is more believeable IMO than many of the others.

And we have hashed and rehased that issue enough times.

They've already done two price cuts with this and they're probably losing money with every sale. I can see that everyone takes what Sony says about price cuts with a grain of salt, but realistically what's the point of another price cut? To lose another $100 on every sale? Look at it this way, they had this year's price cut last year, so maybe next year they'll have one.

But they've only had one price cut.

20GB price cut from $499 to $399, discontinued then replaced with 40GB at 399.
60GB price cut from $599 to $499, discontinued replaced by 80GBGen1.

80GBGen1 discontinued with no replacement planned with equal or similar features (this is the last PS3 to offer PS2 B/C in any form)
40GB @ $399 discontinued replaced with 80GBGen2 (also known as the 'Core') @ $399.

80GBGen1 != 80GBGen2, they are different models with different features. The Gen2 is basically a 40GB with an 80GB HDD, and the bundled 160GBs will still be basically a 40GB with a 160GB HDD ie no PS2 B/C.

I think they have most likely broke even now on the PS3, but I can only imagine that another price cut would lead to additional losses. It really comes down to whether Sony wants to lose further ground in the console wars to Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony can definitely make the money back up in game sales if the console is popular, but it could still take years to recoup losses. It really just depends on how bad Sony wants to stay in the console wars. So who knows what will happen?

Funny how pricecut talk gets bandied about constantly on the PS3, and the same folks claim what an incredible value it is. Yet I don't hear the same price cut chanting regarding the Xbox and it got just a $50 price drop last year and that's it.

It was two price cuts as far as availability is concerned. You can argue HD capacity differences until you're blue in the face but that fact is the 20 GB PS3 was unavailable in the US for several months and to buy a PS3 you had to pay $600. Then last summer they lowered the price and henceforth you could buy one for $500. Finally last fall they introduced a 40GB model (big deal, it's still a PS3) and lo and behold you can buy one for $400. Two price cuts, and now everyone is screaming for another. Can't the PS3 compete against the Xbox and Wii on its own merit at $400? Is it not supposed to be the greatest value in CE history?

Xbox just had a major price cut recently. You can now get the arcade model for just $199 and that comes with a couple of games. They also offer a 60GB model for $299 and a 120GB Elite model for $399.

As a gamer, I think the Xbox is a better value. If you are somebody that enjoys HD movies too, the PS3 is a better choice.

This is why I think the PS3 will need either a new SKU or reduce the price. The Wii and Xbox are signifcantly cheaper consoles and many families are tightening their budgets for Christmas. Big difference in price between a $250 Wii, a $199 Xbox and a $399 PS3. Sony needs to get a $299 PS3 out there fast IMHO. But I am talking about this strictly from a gaming perspective. Obviously is somebody is looking to buy a console to play games on and watch HD movies the PS3 is a no brainer.
