As a gamer, I think the Xbox is a better value. If you are somebody that enjoys HD movies too, the PS3 is a better choice.

This is why I think the PS3 will need either a new SKU or reduce the price. The Wii and Xbox are signifcantly cheaper consoles and many families are tightening their budgets for Christmas. Big difference in price between a $250 Wii, a $199 Xbox and a $399 PS3. Sony needs to get a $299 PS3 out there fast IMHO. But I am talking about this strictly from a gaming perspective. Obviously is somebody is looking to buy a console to play games on and watch HD movies the PS3 is a no brainer.
I guess I need to keep up with the console wars before I start hating on the PS3.

Trust me. The format war (BD vs HD DVD) has nothing on the console wars. I stay away from those forums completely. With two young children I find myself gaming less and less (I have owned all three consoles at one point, PS3, Xbox, Wii). I got rid of the Xbox (and miss it still from time to time) because I just did not care about gaming as much anymore and spend much more time watching movies (hence why I like the PS3 so much as it serves double duty). The Wii is mostly just used for parties and when nieces, nephews, and babysitters are over.

Yeah, I hear you on that. But I didn't know the Xbox dropped in price recently. My stepkid plays Halo3 constantly on my Xbox, but even though I have about 15 games or so, I haven't touched the thing in over a year. I just don't have the mental energy anymore after coming home from work.

Default Blue Ray Players For 149.00

I just read this in the Blue Ray area of the forum.
If Samsung does this, it will put Sony in the poor house.

I never bought anything on black friday before, do they offer bf stuff online too? I won't stand in some line for hrs to be turned away because they only had 20 units to begin with.

I would buy BR if it was 149.00.

Many retailers offer deals online but I would be shocked if you could find a deal this good online. Me? My days camping out for Black Friday sales are over. I would rather buy the Samsung for $229 at Amazon right now that comes with The Ultimate Matrix boxset free. I could turn around and sell The Matrix for $70 or so. Not quite $149, but it would be close ($159-169 depending on how much you can sell The Matrix for). And I have thought about this several times, but there are too many other priorities and I have been buying movies like crazy lately. Not sure I am ready to discuss this with the wife...

I hear BD's are the new crack! j/k

I didn't realize they had gone down to 229.00 on Amazon.

Thanks for the info.

No it wont happen. The PS3 is just now breaking even, costwise. Their gaming division main revenue generator, the PS2, sales are in a decline. What warchest that the PS2 did build up was drained by the format wars and Sony's decision to include a BD drive in the PS3.

Wont happen. Im even willing to make a month long ban bet that it wont.

Last I heard the cost of making a PS3 was ~$400.

For once, I'm taking Sony for their word.

I don't see a price cut coming. Main reason being (aside from finally breaking even on each sale) it still wouldn't compete for 'average gamers' who can get a 360 for $200 or a Wii for $250.

The PS3 has placed itself in a very peculiar position. It has overshot the 'hardcore' gamer, and completely overshot the casual gamer. Unlike in their new movie biz, Sony has been letting some semi-exclusive dev houses (studios if you will) go on to be multi-format.

Why? I don't know.

Microsoft really got the stranglehold on dev houses when they came out on a DX based platform. In the past, every console had a unique coding environment. But the MS platforms coding environment is very similar to PC coding, which is where most if not all devs have their roots (or at least a great deal of working knowledge.).

All is well in the kamspy household when it comes to gaming though. I recently won an Xbox 360 in a game of Madden (high stakes when there is alcohol involved). So I'm good either way.

After 2 whole years I would think the original 60gb could break even.. but of course we dont have the original 60gb and alot of stuff has been taken out since then. SACD support, 2 usb ports, extra memory ports, PS2 CPU, PS2 GPU. So it isnt at all crazy to think Sony has alot a room to drop the price.

Imo they need to. The cheapest 360 is cheaper than the Wii.. THE WII!!! and the cheapest PS3 is STILL $400, double the price of the 360. If they cant drop the price then they better come out with one heck of a bundle..

They did leak bundle SKUs a few weeks back. I believe they include Men in Black and game, and another Sony BD and a game. Sorry for the shotty memory here. These may be Euro bundles. I think LittleBigPlanet is included. LBP is Sony's only real hope this holiday season on the mainstream gaming plate.

They've almost stopped marketing here in the US. Probably tired of trying to sell the systems to people in soup lines

I say we semi-annex Canada, trade the oil shale for Obama, and go about our capitalist smokestack ways.

You would have thought that Sony would have released a PS3 that had a sizable hard drive (40-80GB) and did not include a Blu-ray drive. They could have easily made that particular model $199 and given the XBOX some stiff competition.

You'd lose the PS3s biggest selling point over the Xbox 360 then though, especially as it wouldn't be able to play any of the current games as they're all on Blu-ray discs and also many of the bigger PS3 titles wouldn't actually fit onto a DVD.

I think Microsoft have really turned things around in the last few months and got themselves out of the "rock and hard place" regarding their systems performance and managed to turn it onto Sony who now could really do with a price drop just to compete, but at the same time can't afford to do one really as another price drop would probably wipe out all profit potential from the PS3 for it's entire lifespan.

It may not happen, but it really depends on how well the PS3 sells at $399+499 respectively. If sales of the 360 and Wii increase dramatically and PS3 sales stay flat or decline Sony will not have a choice. They will most likely need to come up with another SKU that is even more stripped down to cut costs. This is the way it goes. If the PS3's sales remain close to the 360 I doubt we will see a price cut. But the PS3 is significantly priced over the other consoles. They have a tough challenge in the current economy trying to get people to spend that extra money to get a PS3. The Blu-Ray drive helps, but I am not convinced it is enough. I mean this holiday season you can pick up an Xbox Arcade and a $149 BD Standalone player (if the rumor is true) vs a PS3 and still save $50....

What if Sony were to develop a SA player that had all the features and speed of the PS3 , but it lacked the ability to play any games whatsoever? It makes you wonder what the price tag would be on that type of player.

I have often wondered if Sony would consider using the Cell in a standalone player. Probably too pricey for a low end player, but you would think they could do it for a mid to high end player. I think there are quite a few folks that would pay $400-500+ for a Sony BD player with a Celll in it.
