Nice find! This part has promise......

MOD Systems provides retailers with a complete digital media system for consumers to load entertainment to portable devices and storage media, or burn content to an optical format (CD/DVD). The MOD Retail Enterprise System, deployed with leading global retailers, supports all content types and distribution scenarios including manufacturing-on-demand, delivery in optical or digital format, and hybrid online and in-store systems. Video entertainment content will be provided by major and independent studios, which will provide approximately 4,000 titles at the launch of the service. Initial content downloads will be in standard definition, and the service may also be applied to downloads of high definition content in the future.

Just need to remove that "may" word and add lossless audio.

So now consumers will have to buy yet another new device to play movies on their TV. Or the PS3. I can certainly see the PS3 being capable of playing off this kind of card (assuming you have the one with the card readers). I can play AVCHD movies off an SD card right now on my PS3. If I could go pick up a movie on a 64Gb SD card and watch it on the PS3 that would be sweet.

Oh wow, I just predicted this in another thread two seconds ago. I'm really ahead of the curve.

Mobiushky, They aren't talking about distributing movies on SD cards. They're talking about distributing a file format that can be loaded onto devices such as, for example, SD cards. The file can be loaded onto any random device or downloaded over the internet.

That follows what the music world is testing out:

The end of music CDs?
Posted: 11:42 AM ET
How I remember those days of vinyl records, 8-track tapes, cassettes, and CDs. Yes, I said CDs. Their days could be numbered as a new music format is about to burst onto the scene. Slot Music, a micro SD card that is about the size of a fingernail, has been developed by SanDisk. Each SD card will hold an album’s worth of music, album cover art, liner notes, and will have extra space for personal files and photos. All songs will be free of copy protection as well.

So far four music companies — Universal, Sony, Warner (a corporate cousin of CNN), and EMI –are on board as they hope to add another revenue stream to their bottom line. CD sales dropped 19 percent last year.

Best Buy and Wal-Mart are just two of the big retailers that will carry Slot Music. The new format is expected to be out before the holiday shopping season. Twenty-nine different albums ranging from Usher, Weezer, Akon, and even Elvis will be available at launch.

Micro SD cards can be played in many cell phones and MP3 players. Each album will come with a USB device so you can access the album on your computer. All we need now is a Micro SD player for our cars.

Is this the end for CDs or will Slot Music become just a short fad?

I like the lack of copy protection. Sounds like they finally wised up and decided to develop a format that plays on any device. The whole purpose of DRM is to prevent interoperability.

I like that this comes with a USB adapter too. I can plug that right into my cars audio system.

Wow, this happening faster than I imagined. I do expect video to follow in the not so distant future.

I got that. What I meant was, I could take my 64Gb* card down to the local wherever and dump the movie onto it. Take it home and watch it on the PS3. That would be sweet. The problem is, that most consumers don't have a method for displaying video contained on an SD card (or other flash memory) on their spiffy new HDtv's. With the exception of the PS3 or an HTPC, I don't know of any that do it. Which means new hardware.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it if it works out and is more convenient. But I still think it'll be a hard sell for a while since people REALLY like that physical disc still. It's why you don't see an entire season of SD TV shows on one BD. People don't want to pay $100 for one disc. or whatever. But I think that's changing slowly with more tech savvy kids.

*by the time this really takes off, which I have no doubt it will, the cards will be 128 or even 256Gb I'm sure so you could "rent" all the movies you want in one trip.

Samsung, Phillips and I believe Toshiba sell smaller (32") HDTV's with a USB port.

I think the physical format will work better for audio, because audio devices are inherently portable. It's better to just have a little thing you can plug in and go. Once it's plugged in, then you can load songs into memory or organize or do whatever you want to do. Of course, since there's no copy protection, the content is not married to the media, so there will be other delivery options as well. It's still sort of media independent.

Video needs to be divorced from physical media. Video devices are normally anchored to non-portable displays (portable video is the bastard stepchild), and it's better to deliver the content in a non-physical way. Then it can be stored however you like.

But Hollywood does need to let go of DRM to make it work.

Do they have the software (or any other decoding ability) on board to playback video files? If so, what kind of video files?

Toshiba NAND flash 56nm > 43nm in 1Q09

Toshiba is planning to advance all its NAND flash process technology to the 43nm node in the first quarter of 2009 and will phase out the current 56nm process in a bid to counter falling prices, according to industry sources.

The move will make Toshiba the leader terms of process technology and should enable it to achieve the lowest costs among all flash players.

However, reducing costs may not necessarily boost the company's profit, but it will at least limit the likelihood and extent of any losses, noted the sources.

My pioneer has a USB also, but it can only show a slideshow of pictures on the drive. No audio, no video. That would require decoders built into the TV's. Which means more processing power. So unless you plan to buy another new TV, it means a seperate box with the capability. But it could be a much cheaper box.
