A 500GB drive sounds huge until you try to store a bunch of say 20GB movie files on it, then you are limited to 25 movies only. Then what happens WHEN (not if) the hard drive fails? A backup system that can handle the load, and DRM that allows this backup method would be required before i ever bought ANYTHING.

I have had more than 10 hard drive failures since buying my first computer in 1987. They all fail sooner or later and a multi-thousand dollar library of movies would need a "approved" backup method at a reasonable cost for me to consider this. Just do not see having this kind of complete system in place within 5 years myself.

Can't say this anything new in corporate politics. That's the first thing they discuss in their weekly board meetings, "Who's suing who?"

Give the man the prize!!! Winner, winner! That's the point. Will it happen? Yes. Will it be bigger than DVD and BD? Probably. But it isn't going to be the standard until technology can catch up to the dreams.

There have been a lot of comments about tv's coming with a USB port or an SD slot on them. Yes they do. Even my Pioneer DVD recorder has a USB port. But all of them are for pictures ONLY. The are not capable of playing movies or music. Which means they would be useless in this scenario. That means either buying a new TV or some kind of external box. I agree that they could be small and cheap. Look at the HD Slingbox. Could be similar and could probably be less than $200 too. No moving parts. In 5 years, we will see 10 Tb drives or larger. Can you imagine a box that has CD, DVD, BD, flash card readers, usb ports, downloads movies, plays all formats, etc... Oh wait, I have one, it's called a PS3... LOL!!! j/k. But the more I read about technology the more I feel confident in the PS3 as the most future proof media system in the world. Now if only that "plays all formats" thing was true about the PS3......
LOL.

Yeah, this is my main concern on HDs. I love the concept, but right now it seems to buggy. It appears the best means for security against loss is a hard media device. I could live with Flash Drive (or solid state device), but I feel it's years away and may miss the boat for mass adoption.

I do have an issue with requiring a new playback device to use this like Mobi does, but I think this will just be another method available to people down the road to get their movies. It will create more competition for BD and just dilute it's adoption some as a result of more and more different home video source options, but for me, BD is where it is at for a few years.

They didn't say whether this was rental or buying, and if it is buying the movie, where do you store these movies safely?
If I had to guess there will be DRM and this will be a rental based model (ie you have 24, 48, 72 hours etc for playback). Otherwise you could have a single person download this on an SD card, copy it to their hard drive, and then share the SD card with all their friends as well for copying/burning to a DVD. I cannot imagine the studios being onboard with that idea.

The good old MiniDV tape reliability for backup edited material from HDV camcorders...

Let´s wait for better prices/ high capacities in solid state drives...256Gb, 500Gb...

STEC Mach8 MLC SSDs with 512GB sizes.

But that is just it. It is most likely going to take years for 500GB solid state drives to drop to acceptable prices. I think there is a definite place for solid state drives and home entertainment, but I think it is way too early.

Yeah, definitely something for the future, but not the near future. This is like the Blu-ray talk that was happening a decade ago. It will very likely happen, it's just a matter of when...

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
What's the problem?
I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
What are you talking about?
Your diet is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

That was great!

You missed the line about government regulations also clearly state that you cannot be more than 3 lbs overweight because of the higher medical costs and allowing access at this time would cause this to happen.
