Sony Cancels Trio of Romantic Comedy Blu-rays

In a move only a cynic could love, Sony Pictures has yanked the planned Blu-ray releases of the romantic comedies 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' 'Mona Lisa Smile' and 'Maid in Manhattan' from its fall schedule.

As first announced last month, Sony had initially planned to bring the trio of hit chick flicks to Blu-ray concurrently on September 30, along with a fourth title, 'Can't Hardly Wait.'

Though 'Can't Hardly Wait' remains on track for release, Sony has now removed the other three titles from its schedule, offering no new date.

At press time, no reason has been given for the cancellation, nor if or when a new date for the rom-coms will be announced. As always, we'll keep you posted.

In light of Sony's news, we've moved 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' 'Mona Lisa Smile' and 'Maid in Manhattan' to the "Release Dates Postponed" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule.

Wonder if this'll effect the UK releases for these titles, my girlfriend won't be happy if it does

Why do I get the feeling that this might have to do with this genre of movies not selling very well on BD?

Most of the BD movies I buy/rent are not interesting to my wife so she rarely watches them, but she DOES love romantic comedies. There just are not many so the studios need to kick up these types of movies for diversity reasons despite the sales not being as great for the sake of the format.

I won't miss them. I'd rather they concentrate on more popular titles.

I'll miss them, I can't enjoy action/horror films with my gf as it's clear she isn't interested in them in the slightest, these sorts of titles give me something to share the HDM experience with her.

That's fine with me as my wife has her favorites on SD DVD anyway and she is happy with them just the way they are presented.

My wife loves these types of movies and we own all three of these on DVD. I am pretty firm though and we have yet to double dip on a chick flick that we already own on DVD.

So you have not double format dipped on "chick flicks" yet, but what about "Guy flicks"?

They're not "guy flicks", as I have had to inform my wife. They are critically acclaimed movies that are enjoyed by the masses. Her come back is always if I want to see all that shootin' I'll turn on the news.

Haha. What do you think? I try to be careful what titles I double dip on. I may have grabbed My Best Friend's Wedding on Blu-Ray (I liked that one), but my wife just does not care as much as me when it comes to double dipping. She can definitely spot the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD, but is not nearly as anal about it as me.

There are only a few comedies I will double dip for (Dumb and Dumber for sure), but most of my double dips are action adventure.

The same for me with most DDs being action movies. But I buy HDM as much for the sound as for the picture improvements. That IS the type of titles the sound really stands out with.

I liked My Best Friend's Wedding, and for some reason I really like Notting Hill also despite not being a huge Julia fan. Go figure.

Bah. Shame on them for delaying these titles.

If it would have been a few random titles, i'd say "so what". But pulling a group of "chick flicks" imo really sounds like someone said "We need to focus on our priorities, and these movies aren't high on the list".

Wow! This is SONY doing this?

Doesn't bode well for films that don't meet the potential strong sales demograohic (*cough* PS3 gamers *cough*).

Oh wait, maybe they are just capacity limited because there is insufficient BD replication capacity to meet anticipated Q4 demand. Seems to me someone here once said we would see delays and titles falling off the roster for no apparent reason as Q4 loomed.

I always hated the PS3 gamer demographic talk. The best sellers on both HD DVD and Blu-Ray have always action flicks. It is not like romantic comedies were flying off the shelf on the HD DVD format either. I suspect that demographics do play a role. I would fathom that most HDM buyers are males in the 18-40 year old range.

We have no idea why these were delayed. Could it be capacity? Maybe, but all of these movies should fit just fine on a BD25 disc. It could also be a marketing move on the part of Sony. We don't know.

Which excludes both BobY and Lee. Funny how a little fact like that plays into things. Both have expressed their displeasure with gamers too (let's not forget that HD DVD add-on though....didn't see too much complaining then...) I guess gamers can't be 'movie lovers".

Oh no! The sky is falling, three shitty movies that might sell a few thousand copies total were cancelled. We have already had one doom and gloom post from BobY, how about Lee (who started the thread)?

When should I sell my player guys? I just know bluray is folding. This is merely the beginning....
