Default Microsoft claims first with native Blu-ray support

Quote:
Microsoft has announced that it is the first operating system developer to more completely incorporate Blu-ray support into its platform, with the addition of the Microsoft Feature Pack for Storage which will allow Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 users to burn Blu-ray discs directly from the OS without the need for usually expensive third party applications.

The software giant says the upgraded storage patch will add the ability to "lock down removable storage with a certificate or password to prevent the theft of secure material and will also add new forms of Smart Card support for government workers and others that depend on the standard to access networks and data."

Although the update is still a test beta, it is expected the full release will be within 3 months.

This new approach from Microsoft should help to speed up the rate of adoption for Blu-ray hardware, especially as prices continue to lower for drives.

MS is clearly going after the corporate sector with this move corporations spend piles of dough on backup servers and redundancy and tape drives and optical drives for backup data purposes. Why not try to woo back some defectors that left for Unix, Linux and Novell server solutions with this release for all your OS platforms. It is a great business strtegy move by MS in the corporate OS world. Multi user liscences is huge money along with multi user server support.

Definately agree with this guy!

MS may have a giant ego, but MONEY always makes them see the other way haha.

I can't wait for this to trickle down to us low level consumers. I wonder if this means it will incorporate Sun Microsoft's Java so we don't need third party software for BD playback?

Doubtful, but good to see my PC can read my burnt discs without giving me all kinds of weird results.

Finally, third party companies won't be able to charge a bogus premium for Blu-ray support anymore.

You know what's funny? Microsoft never integrated HD DVD support into either current operating system, despite insisting it was a priority. Kinda suprising that it's now including Blu-ray as a standard.

Not really, why waste millions writing code for a format that may not last more than another few months?

The surprising part is that Apple weren't the first with this given their support of Blu-ray from the beginning. I even recall some mac owning friends of mine telling me I needed a mac to be able to get the most out of Blu-ray. Looks like Windows wins again.

Is it just me or are burners getting really cheap?

Saw the LG BD/HDDVD burner for $300, to me it seemed like CD and DVD burners were in the $500 range for the longest time when they first came out.
