Please note that these screenshots are not a a moving image but only still image frames. A still image screenshot of a moving image can show more - or less - artifacts due to the non-moving nature of the screenshot. A still image should not be used as the sole qualifier to conclude that a HDM title features good or bad video quality, the HDM should be watched in full motion for that. Screenshots give the viewer a general idea of what a title will look like, and they may not be fully representative of the true quality that HDM offers.

Thanks for the pictures. Wall-E really does look amazing. You get a real 3-D feel just by looking at the images. I think this is gonna be the new Blu-ray reference disc!

Here are some random shots from an unpopular movie. Pics are copied from the AVS "whining about TDK pq" thread, which has many more pictures. Pictures haven't been taken by me, so i don't know if they are accurate.

The original png pictures have really huge file-sizes, so i've let them run through a more efficient multiple pass png compression. As png is lossless, the quality of the screens stays the same.

Left side is TDK preview from the BB disc, right side is the retail BD.

If you're looking for it, the thread is actually called "The Dark Knight" PQ issues.

The color balance looks funny to me. The preview disc looks like it has a green cast, and the retail one looks magenta. They need to find a spot somewhere in the middle.

Also, I can see what they're saying about the edge enhancement in the retail version. It looks harsh. (although some people enjoy edge enhancement, and call it "super resolution" ) The preview has better detail, but the contrast on the retail is better. Maybe there will be another transfer of this in the future.

I was thinking the preview has a yellowish cast while the BD has a bluish cast myself. Neither seems completely right, but do agree that it should be somewhere in the middle.

They both seem a little soft to me.

EDIT:

I can see more of what you were saying about the colors in the second set of pictures of the buildings though, but in that second set, the second BD one looks closer to what should be correct with my eyes.

The contrast imo is a little bit crushed. There is shadow detail missing in the buldings, where some parts had texture in the BB preview and are now flat black in the retail.

These two pics are both from the IMAX part of the movie, which as moving video from the BB disc looks fantastic. Watched it again last night after seeing the screenshots at AVS. So besides from the different color timing and the slight black crush, i think both screens look very similar. That leads me to believe, that the retail BD's moving video will look spectacular, at least concerning the IMAX part.

I'll reserve statements about the rest of the 35mm film until i have seen it in motion. By now i had too many cases where the screenshots misrepresented the moving pq, as to jump to any conclusions based on still frames alone.

Ugh. Those caps do make it look bad, but your right about the stills always looking worse than the picture in motion.

But, still.....
