HOME MEDIA EXPO: Demos interface at Home Theater Forum event

JUNE 24 | LAS VEGAS—Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is pledging to feature BD Live interactivity on all of its Blu-ray Disc releases that street after last week’s Blu-ray bow of Men in Black.

Rich Marty, Sony’s VP of new business development, demonstrated the BD Live interface it has made standard in all forthcoming Blu-ray releases during a Tuesday Home Media Expo session for Home Theater Forum members here.

Sony’s BD Live interface will vary in terms of its offered selection of Web-enabled features, but certain elements such as downloadable trailers, will be incorporated into all upcoming Blu-ray releases.

Also standard to each Sony Blu-ray title is the ability to pop in any of the studio’s upcoming releases in the format and access past features that were downloaded onto BD Live enabled players.

Marty told the HTF audience that Sony is especially committed to such Web-enabled interactivity because of early positive consumer reaction on the studio’s first BD Live releases, Walk Hard and The Sixth Day.

“We have seen a great response so far,” said Marty. “Twenty percent of people who bought the titles are activating BD Live, and of that 20%, 75% went and downloaded something from the discs. There is an appetite for this.”

Sony will push for increasingly innovative BD Live features, added Marty. The studio promises creating live red carpet events that can be enjoyed by networked Blu-ray player users.

“We are in the early days of BD Live, and this is just a taste of what the technology can do,” he said.

NICE! Can that promise that ALL BD players will be able to use it? Or is it only theirs that will, one day?

You know what I would like it if they put trailers for upcoming movies with an option to play them on the discs. I kind of like watching them, just not when I'm forced to when I want to watch them before watching the movie. I don't mind DL them but unless I'm looking for something I'd probably not bother.

If they tied Live into them where you could just click and add your name to a list so when the movie gets released on BD you would get a copy (maybe even a few days early as a reward) and an on screan promt letting you know when that movie is expected to ship.

That is the one thing I can't stand about Disney's .

That is one of my pet peeves about some BDs. Being forced to watch trailers by being able to skip them. IMO, they belong in the "Extras" group.

Thats just Disney though really tbh. Well, those studios always put that sorta crap on their DVDs too so it's not really a BD thing. I have no doubt had they supported HD DVD the case would have been exactly the same.

Yeah, I should have not made it look like it was a BD only thing... I dislike it on SD too.

I didn't mean to make it sound like a BD thing. But for awhile Dish or Adelpia had a channel of nothing but trailers in HD. It was kind of fun to watch. Some stuff was nothing I really cared about but then something really cool would come on. Both picture and sound would blow you away leaving you with a "I've got to buy that" and a "I'm going to wait until I have everything set up correctly before I watch it".

But to force people to watch trailers just means I leave the room to get something to drink or the bathroom. I purposely don't watch them. I guess with Disney the kids who see them start saying things like "I want that" but probably forget long before you get a chance.

Anyway it would be nice if they would let me pick and choose or if the trailers would come up when you paused the movie for too long. Then use Live to keep me informed and maybe DL alternate trailers if they have any.

I wasn't tryin to be a forum police or anything I was just stating that I thought it'd be the same regardless of format etc and it was a studio decision more than anything else.

Do we really need a disc for this? Couldn't you just do it with a browser, or call it up on your shiny iPhone?

I wonder if 80% would indicate an appetite for this. Like, the 80% that didn't bother with it.

Maybe they should try a web event first, or maybe a TV show, and see how that does. What if I buy the disc and don't make it home in time for the live event? Doh!

Red carpet live event? What will that likely be? Just put the bloody thing on the disk and use the space where they put the annoying trailers! We can download the trailers instead.

I've never used a single BD live feature. The only time I even used a 1.1 feature was to make sure the firmware worked.

I guess some people are into it though.

As for downloading trailers, you can do that on most cable boxes (in HD no less) and easily with a computer, PS3 or 360.

Question to those with the SALs? Can't you guys skip the previews?

On the PS3, you hit Square and bam top menu.

And with the new bookmark feature, pop the disc in long as you left it on the top menu, bam top menu!

Bam!
