Default Blu-ray DVD format may not dominate for years

This is from Yahoo news.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080601/...hlER.F1E6s0NUE

It's mostly what's been said here before but there's a few numbers that should be pretty current.

Quote:
LOS ANGELES - Blu-ray stomped HD DVD to become the standard format for high-definition movie discs, but years may pass before it can claim victory over the good old DVD.
Quote:
"I have to admit, Blu-ray is great," she said. "(But) I'm going to wait until they go to half-price."
Quote:
Consumers are balking at the $300-plus cost of most Blu-ray players especially because only limited movie titles are available in the format.

"People aren't going to pay three times as much for a platform that's only half-baked," said Steve Wilson, a consumer electronics analyst with ABI Research.
Quote:
Manufacturers are planning a souped-up lineup of titles and special features on Blu-ray discs to boost sales this summer and during the coming Christmas season in the hope that Blu-ray can turn around the sagging home video market. And retailers are creating new displays to explain Blu-ray's benefits.
Quote:
And Blu-ray's adoption curve is similar to — maybe even faster than — that of DVDs, backers say. Blu-ray players, now available for three years, cost $100 less than DVD players did at a comparable point in their life cycle, said Dorinda Marticorena, a senior vice president at Warner Home Video, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

Personally, I don't care if they dominate.

I think its done enough so it won't be going anywhere. So all I want is day and date releases with a few of the really big catalog titles.

These articles are starting to sound more blu ray.

Before it was
"Will blu ray die off?"
"Customers not interested"

now its..
"Domination might be delayed"
"It could take a little longer for BD to destroy DVD"

And your glass is still half Blu. Blu-ray has probably 1.5 to 3 years at most to capture at least half of the home video market. If it does not, which it is looking more and more like it, then SUC or something else will step in at the mass adoption prices.

I'm sure some will think I posted this just because it's negative BD title, they would be wrong. This had enough hits on Yahoo news to make it into the "Top Stories" section. It seams to be written by a pro BD person. I base that on the "BD stomped HD DVD" comment in the first line.

People who sort of care must be reading it. It seams like people are waiting. Studios and CEMs should take notice and find some more ways to get them to pull the trigger.

I don't see BD ever dominating but I don't think it needs to. It just needs to get to a 25% of the market (not just the top 20 market). At that point it will be fine.

You mean this isn't going to happen?

Quote:
The Blu-ray Disc Association, the industry-backed flag bearer for one of the two high-capacity disc formats vying for supremacy in the next-gen DVD battle, says it aims to replace the current DVD storage format within three years.

"Within three years it will just be Blu-ray," Frank Simonis, the Blu-ray Disc Association's European chairman, said at the CeBIT technology trade show.

Sorry, more Blu spin:

While the number of BD players sold is as good or better at a comparable point in their life cycle, that's based on PS3 numbers, not standalone BD players.

As far as BD movie disc sales--not even remotely close in comparable periods.

300k in 1997, less than 1 million in 1998? That definitely isnt blowing away BD SA sales.. especially considering the competition from HDDVD.

Those DVD numbers are 'shipments,' Blu Ray disc 'sales' have already surpassed 5 million this year. Not bad considering only 30% of the market has an HDTV and HDDVD just bowed out a couple months ago. Again, dvd's numbers arent exactly blowing away BDs. I can see why the entire industry is excited about Blu Ray's growth.

I wonder where the available software is compared to DVD is its comparable timeline.

Agreed, lost of BD boasting/predictions in that article... spin.

Frank Simonis is a tool. No way in hell will Blu-Ray replace DVD's in 3 years. Absolutely No Way!

Agreed. As I said before Blu-ray will be VERY lucky to capture 50% of the home video market in three years. 15-25% is probably much more accurate 3 years out, but even then something else better will be along or will at least be in the works.

Blu-ray isn't going anywhere anytime soon, that means top quality high def viewing for the forseeable future, does anything else really matter to anyone on this forum?

That's no fun. I watched Shoot Em Up last night and still haven't come to grips of what the hell was going on with that movie. I guess it was named correctly however. Commando looks like a documentary compared to Shoot Em. V for Vendetta was good.
