Hey,

I see the topic of CRT vs All coming up a few times. Just wanted to mention my projector is a CRT projector.

I may buy sxrd next time but I bought this CRT FP for $400 and then re-built it with tubes from Sony 2 years ago. It still works like new and I don't think I'll have to replace it for many more years.

These days,.. Something like the Sony VW40 which streets under 3K and is 1080p and very simple to setup would be more practical then a CRT set but I love the look of CRT projection too.

Ha Stew I love how you just casually have $200 Star Trek box sets lying around on your speakers

I wish I could afford a setup like some of you guys have but even a decent 46" display over here is the best part of $4000-5000 >_<

I'm hoping to get an X series 52" Bravia at some point next year, I think that'll have to do instead of a projector set up when me an the missus get our own place. We both agree (thank god) that a decent TV will be the most important part of a front room for me though, so she's allowing me to spend silly monies on it

Well here's my set-up. It's pretty meager though since I'm still in college and just live in an apartment. I probably won't get a nice set-up for a couple years until after I graduate and buy my first house. Hopefully I'll still be single and with no kids at that point so no women or small children can prevent me from realizing my home theater dreams.

It's just a 50" Vizio Plasma, Toshiba A-35, Sony PS3, Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD cable box, my 100 or so HD DVD / Blu-ray movies in the corner, and below resides the cheapest Sony Surround system you can get that I got from Wal-mart.

Below you can barely catch a glance of my Xbox 360 too.

Hello Again,...

Just wanted to mention that if you read some of the posts and get to thinking about getting a projector for your HT that the Sxrd projectors get cheaper and better every year. They started over 20K and in a few years have continued to evolve performance wise and now the new model which came out this year under 3K.

The Sony VW40 is a 1080p sxrd pj that looks great. You may be able to see a sxrd projector in person if you live near a Custom HT boutique but also some regular stores like Sound Advice and even Best Buy's that have the Magnolia HiFi section have them up for display.

I've personally seen demos of these in Sound Advice and the Magnolia HiFi section of my local Best Buy. If you think to upgrade your display device eventually,.. these are worth checking out. (Actually going to see them it worth it either way,.. they are just plain old neat.)

DIY Screen, about 2.0 meters wide,
"manual" masking system for 1.8:1/2.4:1
ye olde 2.0 stereo for sound

720p DLP pj

maybe i'll post pictures later, but it's all in a "black hole", not much to see.

I wonder if you're talking about the euro equivalent of the XBR series because I bought a 52" BRAVIA last year and it has the best PQ I've ever seen (and owned) wrt LCD's. The blacks are INCREDIBLE, it rivals plasma and stands up pretty well against CRT.

You're lucky your wife thinks the TV is the most important part of a living room. My girl is almost the complete opposite- "the living room is for relaxing and being with friends and family". She's happy with the audio that comes straight out of the HDTV and hates speakers and cords. I hate cords as well but that's for a whole different post.

Doesn't someone on this forum have "CORDS.... THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!" in their sig? I love that. Sounds like something I'd say when setting up a rack.

Man, I miss college. Living in an apartment with 2 other people. IKEA furniture everywhere. We had a freakin IKEA bookshelf break on us, whole thing just collapsed. CD's, books, DVD's everywhere...

Heh I'm not married, "the missus" is just UK slang for girlfriend

but we are very serious so I don't doubt marridge will be on the cards in the coming years (we want to be settled living together etc. first).

I'm educating her, and surprisingly she is really seeing the benefits right down to being disgusted by the 2.0 audio in my 32" Bravia, when we watched a film through it when my sound system died.

She also watched some of Hotel Babylon on HD DVD at mine, then took the discs with her to uni to watch the rest on her laptops DVD player and was also disgusted at how horrid it looked

so she can see the benefits even if she doesn't agree with the price the good stuff costs.

I don't think she'll let me have my dream of a proper home cinema though... but if I can convince her to have a 52" BRAVIA and a 7.1 sound system, I guess that'd have to do

Oh I don't even know if that lamp is from IKEA. I don't know where I got it. That's one of the things about being in college and having new roommates every year... I don't even know where half the stuff in my apartment came from. Except for my electronic stuff... all my couches, desks, lamps, and chairs are hand-me-down stuff from relatives or random things my roommates didn't want when they moved out and gave to me. I'm telling you, my apartment looks like a hodge podge from a Salvador Dali painting. In my living room there are four mis-matching couches that we've gotten from various relatives and friends. My lamps are a mix of old antiques my mom gave me and Target/Wal-mart/IKEA modern looking things. And even the towels in my bathroom are weird colors like neon green and bright orange to go along with my royal blue bath mat. We look like a freaking Goodwill store.

My favorite part is the mis-matching couches though. We basically just have so many for parties and for drunk people to pass out on after a night out at the bars. Sometimes our place looks like a Hostel in the morning, with everyone expecting us to feed them. WTF, I just gave you a place to crash for the night for free, I'm not feeding your broke ass. Quit eating my Cheerios and stay away from my Dr. Skipper!

You can get a very nice Panasonic 50" Plasma for £1,499.00 in Comet at the moment Mike so prices are coming down.

In my earlier post, I wrote I had blinds when I meant to say shutters, so those blinds should definitely help. Yeah that Panasonic 50" Plasma seems to be the best value right now in the U.S. too. I can get it for $1200 at my local Fry's Electronics... though at Best Buy (a more national chain) they're trying to pawn it off for $2000.

Wow, I have some serious envy goin' on right now.. I just don't have the room in my house anywhere to come up with a dedicated theater.

I'd have to put an addition on the back of my house to make it work... Not having a basement REALLY sucks, it's the one compromise I wish I didn't go for when we bought our house.

Yeah I remember always being afraid of tornadoes when I lived in Texas because there weren't any basements in my neighborhood, but I had heard that north Texas got tornadoes from time-to-time so I was always on the look out. Of course, I was just a little kid at the time so I was afraid of a lot of things at the time... but I remember seeing a funnel cloud one day in elementary school and freaking out. I was from Phoenix and we don't get any natural disasters here other than droughts and an occasional light rain.
