Default OFFTOPIC game related*Blu-ray too Small for Metal Gear Solid 4

Off topic stuff. I cant wait for this game to game out but man I read this article and said shit how many gigs does this game need. Granted it doesnt say if its on a SL or DL disc and seems to be more about having multiple dialogue then anything. I just hope it has alot of hours of gameplay and not a more cutscenes then gameplay

Blu-ray too Small for Metal Gear Solid 4
Kojima speaks out to Famitsu.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, March 3, 2008 - It seems that the tech companies will never be able to keep up with the demands of a Metal Gear Solid game, with Hideo Kojima stating in a Famitsu interview that Guns of the Patriots suffered cuts in order to fit onto to a Blu-ray disc.

At 50GB, the Blu-ray offers nearly six times the storage capacity of a DVD – but it's still not enough for the demands of Metal Gear Solid 4. Earlier last week the game's assistant producer Ryan Payton confessed that the American and European versions would not carry the Japanese voice track due to storage limitations. Hideo Kojima further elaborated on the issue and stated in a Famitsu interview, kindly translated by Kotaku, that, "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."

It's already known that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be dialogue-heavy – to an extent that could well outstrip its quite comically verbose predecessors. But the possibility of the amount of chattering outstripping even a Blu-ray disc is quite terrifying. Brace yourself for an earful come June 12.

That makes me wonder - is some of the content uncompressed?? How many previous gen games would be too much for DVD if they were uncompressed?

Dang... they should be able to fit months of mp3 audio in 50GB. Sounds like the game developers are being dumb, not that there are limitations with the media.

It means they are lazy. Just like when storage space and memory expanded on PCs, the code writers just get lazy and stopped optimizing the code. That is where the term bloatware came from.

Look at the wording - I realize it all SHOULD be compressed, but the way its worded makes me wonder.

I am, Kojima is famous for having far too much "FMV" filling up needless megs and gigs on discs

Can't deny when you get immersed in his software it's pretty much the most immersive software money can buy though.

I took it to mean he had to decide where to do more serious compression that results in poorer quality video or audio. But maybe he prefers to use uncompressed video for best quality.

I guess what means for AAA titles who refuse to use any compression Sony should consider using a triple layer disk. But I don't think they even make them just yet...
