Breaking: Toshiba Schedules Press Conference, HD DVD Announcement Expected
Mon Feb 18, 2008 at 09:00 PM ET
Quote:
Toshiba has scheduled a press conference for later today, at which it is widely expected to announce that it is officially ceasing support of the HD DVD format.

Japanese news site Nikkei.net broke the news that Toshiba has scheduled a press conference for 5pm Tokyo time Tuesday (that's 12am PST), at which the company is expected to announce that it will immediately stop manufacturing all HD DVD hardware and that it will cease selling them at retail by the end of March.

The news comes on the heels of a rapid succession of high-profile setbacks for the format over the past last week. First, three major retailers -- Netflix, Best Buy and Wal-Mart -- each announced plans to endorse the rival Blu-ray format, followed by intense speculation that Toshiba was mulling over its exit strategy for the nearly two-year old next-gen format (a claim that the company later confirmed, though it stopped short of declaring whether any decision had been made).

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any news out of Toshiba's press conference tonight, as well as any other developments as they unfold.

All I can say is they better not pull players off the shelves!

I want my damn firesale if I already invested this much in the damn format. Give me my $5-$10 movies and $40-$100 players at B&M stores at least. I've bought over 50 of the damn things at full price or more (imports).

I want my firesale. Pulling the players off the shelves with further my bitterness for the way they played their game.

I know it is good news. The infidels are running before our cannons. The war is over. HD-DVD has won.

Ummmm.... do you have a purpose? It can't be to gloat about blu ray's success because that's been done already. And it can't be to poke fun at the optimistic HD DVD supporters, because that has also already been done. So yeah, is there some specific purpose or function that you serve?

That would be up to Univ/Paramount/Warner.....my guess is movies will still be released at least through June, possibly longer....however it is inevitible now that Univ/Paramount will go Blu.

so a news conference perhaps announcing the end of HD DVD shouldn't have a thread about it? what "retarded crap" is being repeated here?
