I think I might laugh if Toshiba announced a Blu-ray player. One that also played HD-DVDs. For $150.

At about $300 loss per player, I am sure that is one of the brilliant options Toshiba is considering. Rather than lose hundreds of millions a year, let's see if losing a billion a year works.

That's true, but at least Sony has the PS3 and a significant share of the Blu-ray licensing revenue. I think all Toshiba would have would be the losses since prices could never be raised. I doubt if Toshiba gets involved, the company knows manufacturing costs means profit margins are going to be slim for Blu-ray players so why bother? The market already has a dozen manufacturers, let them fight it out over the slim margins. Toshiba has their sights on something that can be profitable.
