Angry Sony Does NOT OWN Blu-Ray!!!!!

An EXTREMELY popular misconception here is that Sony = Blu-Ray.

That is very far from the truth. MEI (Panasonic) has the largest stake in the intellectual property. Sony, Pioneer and Phillips would be further down the pecking order.

In truth, the BDA likely decided Sony should be the face of Blu-Ray, because of their great public image. I know, enthusiasts know that Sony's product has diminished in quality over the years, and some people are still mad about the rootkits in some Sony/BMG CDs. But general public perception for the Sony brand is through the roof. I think we can agree on that.

Sony does own a few of the major replication lines, and the PS3 is tied to the success of Blu-Ray to some extent, but Sony is not the the largest shareholder in the Blu-Ray intellectual property, and not entitled to the lions share of the royalties.

Knowing this, can we please stop acting like ninjas employed by Sony are going to sneak into our living rooms at night and shuffle our movies about?

What I've read was that Sony approached Panasonic for creating a high density format. DVRs are very popular in Japan and making a optical disc format to record HD was a critical step. They basically developed Blu-ray together and later on Philips came into the picture as one of the three founders of Blu-ray (Philips goes where Sony goes).
Sony was the first to market a BD recorder in Japan in 2003. That was when BDs had no coating ad they used plastic cartridges.
Panasonic and Sony both owns many essential patents in Blu-ray. Philips, Pioneer also have seizable share as well.
Sony was VERY smart working with Panasonic and Pioneer. These were two of the most influential creators of DVD. Panasonic created DVD-RAM and Pioneer created DVD-R/DVD-RW. Also Panasonic owns some essential patents in producing DVDs although nobody benefited as much as Toshiba from DVD.
It makes you wonder; Toshiba should be blamed for not continuing to work with Panasonic and Pioneer in a new format. I think Toshiba just thought it's going to take years and years for a new format to come out.
Blu-ray made them to prepare AOD which is basically a way for them to continue making money from their patents.
For those that say why Toshiba stuck with DVD replication which limited the size of HD DVD; the answer is that's the only they could continue to own most of the patents.

I agree with you guys. A lot of folks keep calling Sony for Blu-ray but they forget how important Panasonic is.
It's much more reasonable to call HD DVD Toshiba's format than calling Blu-ray Sony's format. Toshiba basically owns HD DVD in many ways.

Is that all you got? Sony is 'only' 2nd instead of 1st in BDA license percentage?! They're first everywhere else: studio control, PS3, standalones, replication lines, etc. It's nice knowing they are 2nd in something.

You can't use logic with this group here when it comes to Sony and Blu-ray. I gave up a long time ago.

Sony is the biggest player in the BD market, they stood the most to lose and gain on it. Sony has 90+% of the BD player market.

Sony ='s Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray ='s Sony period. Does not matter what anybody states or writes, this is one FACT that is 10000000% correct.

They positioned themselves behind it with the PS3. Which is less of a gamble than many A/V enthusiasts think. Had BD lost the format war, BD games for PS3 would still be made. Nintendo GameCube used proprietary discs, as did Sega Dreamcast.

When did we start counting every PS3 sold as a player?

The 90% is more like 30-40% for SAL.

Even on the news now they refer it to Sony's Bluray. Maybe you can write letters to the media and inform them that they are wrong?

No, it's not. MEI could legally give Sony the boot from the whole process.

Why are we throwing that " PS3 is or isn't a BD player" crap around again? The PS3 has a BD player in it and always has! Hmm, according to reports, there are nearly 11 million PS3's out there... are you sayind that there are 3-4 million SA's out there?

No matter what Panasonic or anyone else says, Blu-Ray is Sony's.

Yeah, sure.

Panasonic stands to gain quite a bit with Blu-Ray's ascendency. Recall that nine DVD Forum Steering Committee members have been part of the BDA since 2002 and attempted to thwart HD-DVD and essentially work to ensure that the DVD Forum would produce no successor, clearing the way for Blu-Ray Disc.

With DVD sales falling a bit and player prices being too low for the manufacturers' taste, I'm sure Panasonic and crew would like to just stick with DVD and not attempt to create a new, growing market as opposed to an older, shrinking one with lower margins.

Sony is certainly the face of Blu-Ray. They've invested a lot into the format, but the other BDA companies have helped to supplement Sony's cost in being the leader and public face of the format.

Actually according to Blu Ray Disc Ass. its owned equally by all the companies listed on their web page, to many to list so hit the link, http://www.blu-raydisc.com/general_i...009/Index.html
But if you've followed the trail since its birth, http://www.blu-raydisc.com/general_i...009/Index.html or http://www.forbes.com/home/feeds/afx...fx2188394.html I have allot more if you like, but for just about anyone it points to Sony as being the 'leader' in the Blu Brigade.
