Sigmatek Announces SBR-1000 Blu-ray Player
Posted February 14, 2008 by Josh

Sigmatek has announced their first Blu-ray product: a standalone Blu-ray Disc player, the SBR-1000. The player will retail for under 250€ making it by far the cheapest player on the European market. The player will support 1080p24 and 1080p60 output via a HDMI v1.3 connection, as well as being able to decode Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD.

Building this low cost player is possible because it makes use of the recently announced Sony/Nichia laser which is cheaper to produce than typical Blu-ray lasers. The player should be available sometime in April.

Output Resolution: 1080p (24/60) / 720p
HDMI Version: 1.3
Audio Decoding: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS, MP3
Media Support: BD-Rom/DVD/VCD/CD/CD-R/DVD+R (RW)
Video Output: HDMI/Component/Composite
Audio Output: Coaxial

I don't know anything about Sigmatek. I had hoped it might be affiliated with Sigma Designs, the chip maker that makes the chip used in many Blu-ray players. Beats me whether this player will be any good, but I hope it will be. I had missed the news that Sony/Nichia had managed to get the laser costs down, so that is really good news.

Venturer equivilent Chris.

Blu-ray players are coming down now anyway, it's 1.1/2.0 players we need. Amazon.co.uk have 3 Blu-ray players all under £300.

I had some upconverting players from Sigma Designs.. The DreamX and the Momitsu.

One great thing about them is they would upconvert over component and in the case of the Momitsu it would output upcoverted RGB over the analog portion of the DVI-I port. Also,.... you could change the region coding as much as you wanted and also people learned how to "skin" the players by modifying the graphics in the FW.

In short,.. These players were in-expensive, high quality, and broke several rules that big name players like Sony or Toshiba can't get away with breaking. I was hoping they would have been one of the first players in the HD Media market.

I may have to replace my PS3 with one of these players if they continue to be as innovate as they have been in the past.

Don't forget the "natural markup" though.

Examples... Guitar Hero 3 $140 over here, HD DVD players have been slashed to £120 or ($235) etc.

Blu-ray players are now at the price the EP30 launched at in this country in November, so they're following HD DVD prices quite nicely really. As I say, we just need some nice 1.1/2.0 players to hit these prices for now.
