Arrow Toshiba HD DVD Super Bowl Ad - Watch It Here

Not the most creative ad, but I'm sure millions of people saw that $149 price and heard that it will also make your current DVD collection look great. Keep getting the word out in print, online and on TV!

simple and to the point. It does the job it was meant to.

Whether it has an impact is a different story altogether

Honestly, as long as it got the price point across, and showed a few popular movies, that's fine.

We shouldn't have expected or wanted some animal, talking-baby, or has-been celebrity-laden commercial distracting from the main points. And a hammer-toss into Howard Stringer's head would have just confused things.

I don't think that's what he was driving at.

The irony is in them pointing out what a drastic improvement HD-DVD is, and then immediately saying how good traditional DVD's look.

They made one sentence out of it. Makes no sense whatsoever.

This lets people know that they don't have to replace all their current DVDs. I think it's great for them to remind viewer that their current DVD collection will look great on an HD DVD player. Since it comes with free HD DVD titles (7 in total) people will notice for themselves how much better true HD DVD titles look over standard DVD, and I'm sure that many will start buying HD titles as a result.

I fully know what your saying there. But keep one thing in mind.

Toshiba aren't in a hurry to rush DVD out the door. I think the smartest thing Toshiba can do is sell their low end models as Super DVD upscalers "that can also play HD DVDs when you're ready for it". That's what this ad was pushing in a way.

A lot of us forget how insignificant the HDM are at the moment. Toshiba is taking the smarter path towards making inroads imo. They are just letting people know HD DVD is there waiting for when you're ready to move on. Sony is saying "f**k DVD guys, come get Blu-ray NOW. Look the PS3 even has it!!!!" That's just how it looks to me.

Toshiba appear like they are just eeeeeasing HD DVD into the market. As opposed to forcing it in. DVD is stil waaaaaay to big for ANYTHING to have a major effect, even the PS3.
