They specifically mrentioned that high definition DVD has 6 times more detail than DVD. People would have to be retarded to not understand something spelt out that clearly.

My thoughts too. Toshiba and/or the HD DVD PRG have pretty much always just mentioned how great their product is without specifically attacking Blu Ray.

I really thought they would come out with a new better HD DVD commericial. I've seen that same boring add on American Idol and other places on TV. Nothing new, nothing special.

Though I've seen the ad before it was nice to see it agin. And with the price point at the end, it isn't too difficult to understand. When they say with 6 times the resolution of DVD their interset will be peaked. They will go to the store see BD say 6 times the resolution then will ask why their players are more than double. Also with new HD DVD's at least the ones I've bought and/or seen they have a sticker on the front saying something like,"requires an HD DVD player"
Even for joe somebody, it shouldnt be hard to understand

The "Wanted" one with Angolina looked awesome and The one with George Clooney I think it was leathernecks looked awesome as well.

That sucked. I was really hoping for Toshiba to do something big and exciting. They didn't even play that ad at the bar I was watching the SB at. Luckily, most of the SB ad's sucked so Toshiba doesn't look that bad in comparison.

The Clooney football movie is LEATHERHEADS, and it looks like it'll be pretty good (and Clooney directed it....he's had a good run behind the camera so far).

WANTED.....all I can say is Angie--looking hot & kicking ass. I am so there!!!

Sure, that would be clear, but few would pick up on the contridictory way they finished the sentence. Heck, I didn't notice it myself until Hatt pointed it out to me.

Yeah that was a very dismal commercial. I would have thought they'd put some effort into a new commercial instead of tack on the new price tag at the end of the already annoying one they have been running on TV.

I think a big problem for Toshiba is all the upconvert players out there, and the confusion between that and Toshiba's HD-DVD players.

I was at a local BB over the weekend, and saw someone with a Panasonic upconverter in their hands as they were putting it into their cart. Also noticed he had the Matrix trilogy HD-DVD box set in his cart as well. And me, being the inquisitive one, I asked him what kind of HD-DVD player he had. He showed me the Panasonic one in his hand, and he seemed pretty excited to be getting it for about 100 bucks.

So I pointed out to him that he wouldn't be able to watch The Matrix trilogy he had in his cart on that player. And I could tell he was confused. He then told me that a CSR told him "these upconvert players can play any DVD in near HD quality" (more or less his words). He also told me he recently bought an LCD TV. I then mentioned to him that the only players that can play HD-DVD movies would be a Toshiba HD-DVD player. He then told me he looked at those, but didn't want to spend $149.99 where this one he picked up was only $100, and definitely didn't want to spend "over 500 dollars for a blu-ray that does the same thing" (again, more or less his words).

So I proceeded to educate him on the different formats. I wasn't biased towards HD-DVD (even though I prefer it), but told him about the format issues with blu-ray, how it may/may not play the extra features, told him about how the PS3 is the only BD player that could upgrade to 2.0 profile, and how 2.0 profile players are still a ways away. He liked the 5 free blu-rays offer he saw displayed, but didn't think it was worth paying all that money for a player to get 5 free movies.

I then told him how the offer ended already, and that HD-DVD also had a 5-free movie offer that had not yet expired. Of course, BB didn't have any display showing HD-DVD's offer. Told him about the studio support, how blu-ray has about 70% vs HD-DVD's 30%, told him which studios supported which format, etc. Also told him how amazon had them lower priced with no tax/shipping.

Told him how HD-DVD and Blu-ray both upconvert DVDs, and explained how his Panny upconverter only upconverts DVDs and does NOT play HD-DVD's and/or Blu-ray's.

He seemed to be a price-conscious consumer. I spoke with him for about 1/2 hour. Towards the beginning of our conversation, he grabbed a BB CSR so he could have "confirmation" what I was telling him was true. The BB CSR, surprisingly was format neutral. In the end, he picked up an HD-A3, and seemed really happy knowing that he was getting 5 free movies, and basically the player for free. When I told him the 5 free was in addition to the 2 already in the box, he just became even more thrilled.

So I think there's confusion out there where people think upconverters are the same as HD-DVD players, especially when they have the "plays DVD's in near HD quality." And that Toshiba's are just overpriced upconverters. I think what helps is that HD-DVD movies do have the "For Use Only in HD-DVD Players" stickers, but some might still be confused about the whole thing.

I just can't understand why some people don't do any sort of research before they invest in "ANY" electronic merchandise no matter how cheap or expensive.

Nice job on helping that poor guy out though!!

Default Upscaling DVD player is Not Equal HD DVD player

A few weeks ago, my neighbor wanted to borrow a HD DVD movie from me. He has a nice HDTV. When I went over to verify if his HD DVD player firmware is up to date enough to play the HD DVD movie, I couldn't find his HD DVD player. When I asked him where is his HD DVD player, he pointed to his upscaling DVD player. When I told him his upscaling DVD player cannot play HD DVD movie, he refused to believe me. He said his DVD player is connected to his HDTV using HDMI cable which means that is "HD DVD" capable. As I tried to explain to him upscaling DVD player is not the same as HD DVD player, he still refused to believe me. He insisted that I put in the HD DVD movie into his DVD player because in his mind, it has to work. When the HD DVD movie wouldn't play in his DVD player, he was very confused and I can see on his face that he doesn't want to believe it. I don't know how much he spent on his upscaling DVD thinking he got a good deal or something.

This also happened to my parents. After explaining to them that HD DVD movies cannot play on DVD players, the next thing they did is put a HD DVD movie into the DVD player and wondering why it wouldn't play. They said the HD DVD movie label said "DVD" on it.

I can see why people are so confused with HD DVD. To some, "DVD" in HD DVD label means playing the lower quality version of the movie. To some, HD DVD means upscaling DVD to "HD".

What this means is HD DVD needs to stop trying to promote HD DVD players can also be used to upscaling DVD movies to look near "HD". I know Blu-ray players can do the same, but I think because "Blu-ray" name doesn't sound anything like DVD, so more people are less "confused". Also at the same time, I have friends who have PS3 playing DVD movies who don't know about the upscaling DVD capability.

So, which is better way to promote the players as upscaling DVD? Market the HD DVD this caused people to get confused that HD DVD is nothing more than upscaling DVD, or people doesn't Blu-ray can upscale DVD. Plus, I don't think making DVD/HD DVD combo helps to clear this confusion. We need to remember that most of us who already own HD DVD are more technical. For the rest of the consumers, they can't handle all those techno teams. When they hear HD DVD combo movies, they probably don't see it as two formats on the same disc. I really like to see how many of the combo HD DVD movies sold to the "confused" DVD owners playing the DVD side of the disc and never knew why the other HD DVD side doesn't play on their upscaling DVD player. The reason I say this is the disc looks like double sided DVD disc. For a non-technical person, combo HD DVD disc looks just like double sided DVD disc.

My point is HD DVD needs to market the product to be more understood by non-technical consumers, not just technical consumers.
