The FCC has not mandated hdtv and the manufactures did not stop making sdtvs either . There is shelves at the kmarts and walmarts filled with sdtvs from various manufactures. Even my local independent tv dealer has them and they are selling very well.

The televisions of the future as mandated by the FCC are 480i 4x3 format and will have ntsc, atsc (to receive digital aver the air broadcasts), and qam decoders (to receive in the clear cable tv channels). But an important thing is that they didn't require the replacement of analog tvs and the adoption of hdtv after the shutdown date. Has the FCC set regulations pertaining to hdtv broadcasts: YES. Has the ATSC set specifications pertaining to hdtv broadcasts: YES. But there is no mandate to switch to hdtv at all and most likely never will be. HDTV is just a premium service just like HBO.

I agree with you 1000% about people being confused. It seems to me that every time the government, CE industry, and the media try to explain this they seem to create more confusion. The consumers are not confused about HD DVD or Blu-ray, but about the impending analog shutdown date. I do apologize if my tone seems hostile because its not intended to be that way.
Ok, again, we are not disagreeing, but you are telling me stuff I already know. When I said "The fcc mandated..." I admit I oversimplified. Ok, WAY oversimplified. I know the FCC did not mandate HDTV. What I meant was that the FCC mandated that digital tuners be included with every set that had an analog tuner that was sold after March 1, 2007. Notice that it does not apply sets without tuners (monitors). Anyway, my point was that while they are still making SDtv, the thrust of the manufacturers has certainly shifted over to HDtv's with the advent of the mandated digital tuners. I see your point about the way I posted that statement. I was rushing a bit and didn't think it through. Hey, it made sense in my head!! LOL.

But even still, I believe that the mis-perception that a person "needs an HDTV" will drive a lot of people to buy HDtv's this year. Even if they don't need them.

Anecdotal: My mother in law. She bought one because she called me and told me she needed a new TV and had to get an HDtv so she could watch tv after the switch. I tried like anything to explain that she did not even need a new TV, but she wouldn't listen. So she called again and asked about some wal-mart deal (I think it was a Visio) and wanted to know if it would work with the new "HDTV" signals. I tried again to explain, but she again wouldn't listen so I finally told her yes, go ahead and buy it. Then, seriously, not 3 months later she's calling me to see if she should fill out the forms to get the $50 set-top converter for her tv since she doesn't want to "not be able to watch tv." After another pointless explanation I finally just told her yes, get it. Sometimes it's just not worth the argument.....

mobiushky,
In between our posts, my neighbor across the street called me to look at what was wrong with the picture on their new hdtv they just got. Well here is what I walked into. A 40 inch samsung 1080p hdtv with a cheap dvd player hooked up with composite cables and a pan and scan dvd playing on stretch mode. I told them first your going to need a different player like a upconverter or said they can get an A3 from amazon for $128, and a hdmi cable for about $30 from sears where they bought the tv from. The husband was getting pissed especially about the cost of the cable. But when I mentioned that they would be better off replacing their SD pan and scans for SD widescreen dvds, the husband said F%*# this and unplugged the tv with out even turning it off and disconected everything and took it back to sears for his money back. Their going back to analog and its all over SD dvds. So much for the HD DVD vs Blu-ray arguement that people are going to make the step up. These people didn't even want to change from SD pan and scans to SD widescreen dvds.

HDMI cables suck. Steer him towards one of the $5 ones on Amazon next time.

1st day electronics class: Digital is digital is digital. On or off. No grey area possible. People don't understand this about HDMI, it is not an analog signal! It does not require much shielding whatsoever! The best and worst HDMI cable produce the same information to the device it is sending it too.

The $100 HDMI cable is the single biggest rip off in the history of mainstream CE. I pay no more than $10 shipped. The only restriction is length. I believe it is 5 meters or 15 feet for those of us on the idiot system I live in the U.S., but that measurement system is just hilarious, research the history of each unit. I think the english "pound" is was the measurement of some old kings dump or something and decided to make it scientific law. Really sad, and way Sorry.

Kamspy,
This J6P had their cable going into their vcr and then had one of them push on cables going from the vcr to their hdtv. They thought that they were going to record hd on their vcr like they always did with analog. He kind of didn't understand the concept of hdmi and digital let alone the cost of hdmi cables. Their dvd player didn't even have composite outputs on it. He really got pissed at the thought that he had to replace all their pan and scans dvds for widescreens dvds. After this episode I'm kind of laughing at WB saying that J6P is confused about HD DVD and Blu-ray. This J6P didn't even know what HDM was. And as I said he took the tv back and got it removed from his credit card. He's back on analog tv.
