Cool it down and try out a thinner stick or maybe go TIG. I use TIG on any job I can with any metal less than a quarter inch thick. Sometimes MIG is required. Not much we use stick for anymore.

What are you working on with it?
I just play around at work. We have a mig and a stick. My father in law has a stick welder to use around here on the farm but I don't know how to weld with it. I am pretty decent with the mig. Work gets pissed if I want to bring it home to use.
I got pretty good at welding pipe, flat metal and mesh, and angle iron with a mig. Other than that I suck.

I changed jobs for a lower salary with better benefits recently.

I get 15% of my yearly earning put into my 401k every year. Not 15% that comes out, but the company puts that amount in. And they match $1.25 for every $1 I put in. Unlimited.

That is a sweet deal. With the price of gas and insurance going up. It would have to be a hell of a lot of money to make up the difference for that set up.

Yeah. Stick has seen it's hey day.

TIG is where the money is today. Plastic Orbital is also VERY lucrative, but I don't think I could bear to do it all weak. You have to move VERY S L O W. and I do mean V E R Y. I'm pretty good at it. It's alot like TIG, just even more involving. It requires insane patience. I could do it, but I'd hate my job. I do it at my dads shop if we get a contract to do some, but I couldn't do it on a regular basis.

You can usually even get earnings reports without even offending. Depends on the company and how good the report looks.

Ill probably do that. I meet with a recruiter Wednesday.

There's also crazy cash bonuses. Monthly production and quarterly safety.

All in 4 digits.

This new place seems legitimate.. Its just a scary field to get into. I'm in mortgages now though, and this industry just seems to keep going no where but down hill.
Do you think it will stay that way? Might take a few years but the industry can't stay down forever. Though it will probably never see the gravy it did in the 90s.

I have PEIA retirement. I pay in 6% and they put in 14%. When I retire they go off of the highest 3 years of earnings over the last 10 years of service. That is what I make for life, not till the money runs out. I don't carry insurance where I work, cause my wife is a RN and has way better health insurance. But I have excellent sick time benefits and the retirement is good. I have an assload of vacation time and holidays a year, not to mention I only work 35 hours a week. It would probably take about another 12k a year for me to give all this up.

I need to see if I can get work to buy a TIG. I would like to learn how to do that too. It does seem to be the way to go.

The market and the industry naturally will correct itself over time, but the problem is the meantime. Mortgage companies and broker shops don't pay sh*t unless your producing. So waiting a few years for the market to pick back up is just waiting too long.
