It was a hell of a fight (10 lb test) and I had to get him out of the water and up onto land - a distance of 5 feet straight up - we were at the "golf course" and the canal section there is concrete walls on both sides. We have a net but it is a short handle kind.

Then Mr. Fisherman drove my dive knife into his brain and threw it in the bushes for the racoons to eat tonite.

Lots of fun . . . and lots of blood (YUK).

Beers on me!

Sounds to me like you are putting a dent in the snakefish population in FL. Lee. I'd like to catch one sometime, I've heard they put up a great fight no matter how big they are.

That would have been comical, but the information you've given me has helped me out greatly, so I would have only laughed behind your back.

Yes I am . . . Yes they do.

We want to try to catch as many as we can - to rid the canal area where we live of this evasive fish.

What exactly do they do? Do they just eat every fish in its sight. I seen a special one night on tv but didn't see the whole thing. There was a big lake in Michigan that they had gotten into and the Michigan Department of Natural resources put something in the lake and killed every fish in it to make sure that they had killed the snakeheads.

Not really - I do have a light up bobber (I have one of everything . . . )

But so far - we quit at 8:30PM.

I think one night this week I will have to go out with some bagels and toss a line and see what happens.

Mr. Fisherman had an "incident" tonite and he is very comfortable with this baitcaster . . .

He was about to cast and had his lure too low. There is this small "fence" to prevent people/golfers from falling into the canal . . .

He yanked/cast forward and his lure hit the fence and . . . monster birds nest - so bad we had to cut out 1/3 of the line on the reel.

PERSONALLY - I will stick with the spinning reel.

I've hooked things behind several times and made a big mess of the reel. One time My son and Myself and my friend and his son was fishing off this big rock in a lake. I said watch out boys (they was standing behind me) I'm gonna cast, well they stepped to the side and when I went back to cast the other boy stepped toward the other side of the rock. I felt my lure with 2 sets of treble hooks hit something and I knew it was him. I stopped mid cast and backlashed the reel (on purpose) because I knew I hooked him. I hooked him in the forearm and it would not come out. I had to push the hook through is arm and cut the barb off to unhook him. Luckily teenage boys are tougher than pine knots. Rubbed an alcohol swab on it put a bandaid on him and he went back to fishing. I ended cutting my line off the reel and respooling it.

That is exactly what they do. They are a "top predator" and the female gives birth to over 500 eggs. They are good parents so many of the eggs hatch and survive.

Weren't these originally introduce by Aquarist after they out grew their fish tanks or is that another species that I'm thinking of. I know there is also a type of "walking " catfish that were also introduced by Aquarist who didn't expect them to reach such a large size. These fish will actually "walk" using their pectoral fins to move to another body of water and they too have become an annoying introduction to our waters.

Yes - that is my understanding . . and they breed like rabbits.

They are native to Thailand - but they are at the point of extinction there - fished out.

The ones in Maryland are the rarest of the breed due to their ability to survive in cold water.
