My above post. I think you missed it.

To have a format that cannot take full advantage of a movie in all aspects is completely ridiculous. People are going to pay for a feature rich Blu-Ray disc but will not be able to harness those features which in turn are a waste of their money.
See the point I am trying to make, does not matte whether people will use the features or not. You still have to let them deside.

The Toshiba A1 player will continue to be able to play ALL HD DVD movies with ALL of the features for as long as that machine lives. 1.0 Blu-ray players can't, won't, will never be able to do that. . .

Why can't get that?
What I do get is that I'm sure there would eventually be features added to an HD-DVD that would eventually require new hardware. Fortunately for current owners, it's not something they'll have to be concerned with.

But I have read about this before. For Profile 1.0 and 1.1, even with the latest firmware won't upgrade them to 2.0. For profile 2.0 and bd live, they'll have to shell out another $400+ for another blu-ray player.
I feel that it alot of Bluray customer dont think its a big deal then BDA should let customers know and have them decide. If the profile 1.0 are going to be cheaper then still make them and keep selling them at a lower price point then 1.1 or 2.0 that way customer can pick what they want. If they want to just watch movies get a 1.0 player if they would like to use features pay a little more and get 2.0 players.

Sidenote: I think the 2.0 players and future HDDVD players (if there going to still make them) need to come up with 802.11B/G wireless in them. I can see how someone that has a modem and computer in another room is going to have to get a 25ft+ cord around the floor to there player just to access these web features. I mean for god sakes the Nintendo DS has it in there

The HD DVD specs are complete, all the hardware is already in the players. They don't need new hardware just new firmware updates to further better HD DVD.

Just wait & see when Sony finally releases profile 2.1 because the 2.0 is missing something

I'm curious. Do you have any actual proof of this, or did you think your gut instinct would be enough? There's a difference between a firmware update and having to buy a whole new appliance.

Forgive Changeling, he is just trying to start a fight.

He obviously has no idea of what he is posting, he is just repeating terms randomly to try to sound somewhat intelligent and also start his own little flame war.

If you ignore him he will either go away or start trying to become a valued member of the forum.

We shall see.

Some examples spring to mind

HD DUD

But blu-ray has more lossless audio which is better (even though they've never heard lossless since they don't have the equipment to take advantage of it in most cases)

HD DUD isn't even HD, it only goes to 1080i

And let's not forget blu-ray.com's favourite son Jimmy smith: 50 is better than 30

I'm curious, where do people get the notion that no one (or most people) don't care about special/extra features and only want to watch the movie itself?

Just looking at the last ten years or so with standard dvd:
How is it that so many movies have seen 2, 3, or 4 releases, ALL of which have sold well, all because each new release has more or different special features? If the public only cares about the movie, why so many Special Editions, Deluxe Editions, etc?

Why have there been so many complaints about "double-dipping" and "triple-dipping" if all most people want is the movie? If no one (or hardly anyone) cares about special/extra features, then no one need worry about buying the latest and "most complete" edition, as long as the original bare-bones release will still play.

If dvd fans want more special features, then I think it stands to reason that these people will expect the same or even more when it comes to a newer, "superior" format. I think most people would expect it to be superior in every way. (I know a lot of people who complained when a dvd release had fewer extras than the earlier laserdisc release (full frame dvd without commentary vs. widescreen laserdisc with commentary, etc.)

Nice post! I agree! I enjoy the extras on a lot of my HD DVDs and SDs.

Blu-ray doesn't have the features = features are worthless

Blu-ray finally manages to reach profile 1.1 = Bonus view is the second coming of christ

Thanks. I am just so tired of so many people posting as though the average consumer couldn't care less about anything other than the feature film itself. This has obviously NOT been true with dvd. If those who want more were strictly part of a tiny niche market, then ONLY Criterion would be releasing "Special Editions." The fact that every major studio has done this, some of them investing a fair amount of money into extra content, and the fact that some of these special editions have practically flown off the retail shelves, shows that MANY consumers want the extras.

I have multiple editions of many films. For some movies, I have single disc original releases, 2 disc special editions, 3 disc deluxe editions, director's cuts, "unrated" cuts, extended editions, PLUS a SuperBit edition in order to get the dts soundtrack and possibly a less-compressed and better looking picture. I'm sure I'm not alone, based on all the whining people have done for the last ten years about double-dipping, etc., by the studios.

Because Blu-ray folk want to play down the fact that Profile 1.0 players don't have certain features that HD DVD has, basically. It's their dirty little secret.

well this is particularly true with the older generation such as my parents. They say as long as they can either buy or rent the movie on standard def format, they don't care about the special features like PIP or web enabled content. In their eyes, it's a waste of time. Or they feel it's a waste of time to watch the entire movie while listening to the director's comments alongside the actors. But for those of us within the younger generation, then yes those features alongside more resolution is more important to us!

God, I love it when things fly over the head of the pretentious.

And on a seperate tack, what do you mean by valued member? What i see here so far:

1) People who don't agree with the hardcores here don't know what they are talking about.

2) People who have chosen Blu have no idea what they are talking about.

3) People who use the PS3 as their HDM delivery format of choice as well as those that have chosen a 360 with an add-on are sad little children and are beneath us true videophiles. They just have their toys. I did research and I'd wager my setup rivals that of many here, but this isn't a contest and I have no illusions about the purpose of that setup.

As though your SAL, HDTV, and home theatre setups are not also complete and utter TOYS. No matter how much you've spent, no matter how much you've researched them. You don't need them. They are luxury items that are meant to enhance your leisure times. In short: TOYS. And it's sad and more than a little pathetic if you pretend otherwise.

4) That if you want HDM regardless of a format more than whatever format, you're clueless. We've all picked a side and will tout it and hold onto it no matter what, you should, too."

5) Which leads to the fact that if HD-DVD doesn't make you spontaneously orgasm and scream like fangirls at an Elvis concert in the '50s there's something wrong with you.

6) The hypocrisy pill that seems to have to be gobbled in order to be incensed to the point of rage over the alleged WB payoff, but Para/DW is fine...because...uhh....well, we like the red better"

And these are all things I've read here...or had said directly or implied to me so... Pray, tell, what lines do you have to tow to get the exaulted title of "valued member" Where can I offer an opinion and contribute to the discussion (even if you don't like what I say) and where do I have to just parrot?
