Just look at an any old Pro HD-DVD thread from pre 1/4/08 and see how many voices have suddenly silenced or accepted defeat gracefully and moved on....

You have a very odd way of looking at things MR Gerhard.
If the disk has an HD DVD copy of a movie on it, its an HD DVD movie, end of story. The idea that Nielson can decide what constitutes an HD DVD movie is laughable. You have long toted the idea that a PS3 is a blu-ray player but you say a combo isn't an HD DVD becuase it affects the blu-ray statistics. Typical!

Check the poll! People move on and off forums all the time. It means squat. The polls are far more telling.

As far as lower priced HD DVD players and single inventory DVD/HD DVD releases, it won't matter at all. I haven't seen any announcement that a single inventory HD DVD/DVD release sold, if Universal or Paramount ever try that idiotic tactic, will be counted by Neilsen as an HD DVD sold. If most buyers are buying the DVD and not the HD DVD, it looks to me like that is nothing more than a DVD sold at a very low or non-existent profit level. Why would it be counted as an HD DVD, if the consumer didn't buy it for that? HD DVD player prices have always been lower and that hasn't mattered enough to do much and without much HD DVD software, it will matter even less now. This is a way to clear out inventory and then wind down HD DVD is all that can possibly happen and surely even Toshiba realizes that.

Chris
Of course they lied, they published they had no intention of remaining anything but neutral and would not go exclusive with either format up until the day of the announcement.

If there are millions of HD DVD players on the market there will be software produced to supply the base and Blu-Ray had better correct their problems and get the pricing structure down or they wil go nowhere either.

Face it HD DVD had the better chance of mass adoption through price and features like the Combo and Twin disc formats all Blu-Ray has is Sony's ability to spend more on bribes and incentatives (not saying that is wrong or evil just not in the consumer's best interest).

Funny, to me Polls mean squat. All it takes is one fanboy to hit up a bunch of friends and sway a poll either way.

But why would Universal or Paramount bother selling a disc that costs more to produce, plus eliminate any chance of future Hidef pricing (profit), in order to save HDDVD?

If Toshiba pays for one or two titles and Uni/Para accepts not making much money on HD, then BDA will probably work with its own studios to do the exact same thing to even it out. (They can just as easily put in a bare bones single layer blu-ray disc with the dvd. Production cost will most likely be very similar to what a combo disc would cost HDDVD). This would be a preferred approach to me, rather than combo, for three reasons (I think one of these could be fixed by HDDVD with Twin or something):
a) kids can scratch up the dvd and I don't care. They don't get to touch my BD disc.
b) no confusion about how to get the disc to work in a player. Both discs will have artwork on the top of the disc with clear labeling
c) I like to have labeling on the discs (for some weird reason )

Real good rebuttal, there. You are only here for an arguement.. Calling me a zealot for saying your posts are written to cause trouble?? Think again.

Let me ask you this, how many BDs do you own?

Keep up your type of rhetoric and find your place on many member's ignore list, alongside Sti jaguar's as your posts are similar.

The cost of a DVD is a matter of cents not dollars so if you add the DVD side costs to the HD DVD side costs it doesn't add up to much.
To be honest we don't know what is happening within the HD DVD PG but this option was never really exploited before now and maybe it could be.

Would not go as far as saying WB lied, but they were certainly sneaky about it.

Get all those HD DVD customers (yes, Chris...there are a lot of them out there) to jump on board partially due to your neutral stance. Issue press statments quashing the rumors of a single-format switch.

Then, right after XMAS...when those HD DVD players are unboxed and you have sold many copies of your holiday biggies (HP, BLADE RUNNER, etc.), you pull the plug on HD DVD....because it's best for the consumer. Really? What about the near-million (or more, depending on the data you choose to use) consumers you just fucked for the future?

Granted, WB did not pull a Para/DW move and will at least support HD DVD thru May. Better to delay upcoming "red" releases than to yank 'em out of warehouses completely.

Ok....now that I think about it....yeah WB DID LIE!!!!!!

What I wonder is, if the Toshiba "fire sale" translates to a large market penetration for players....does WB have their own "out clause"? If...and I emphasize the IF....Toshiba sees player sales surpase BD SAs, even PS3s, buy a large enough margin....well, wouldn't the "dead" format become too hard to ignore?

I'm really starting to think this is Toshibas plan. Call it and price it as a DVD player. Like a trojan horse DVD player that happens to plan HD DVD's

Even though the players did come down in price and makes a good upconverter I am probably going to wait to buy software until I know for sure that Uni and Paramount are "exclusively" backing HDDVD. thats the press release I want to hear most

At the current prices, it is like getting a med to highend upconverting player, plus the ability to play HD DVD. So actually it is ok to buy the hardware. Does your moral compass let people know not to buy any Blu-Ray standalone player until BD2.0 comes out. Does it also tell people to avoid buying Blu-Ray discs because in another 1.5 to 2 years they will likely all be re-released as 1.1 and 2.0 titles? Does your compass also tell you to warn people that the BDA says that anyone who gets burned by the 2 points mentioned above should have known what they were getting into?
