You mean a price reduction with another one on schedule along with massive T.V./Internet/etc. marketing/advertising & in store marketing/advertising all across the board. When you read about DVD, you will also read about HD DVD.

I admit they should have already done all of this in 2007, they did but not enough. I am guessing Toshiba thought the format could sell itself, and wait? it did sell itself, over 1+ million hardware sales.

Also with Studios and their incentives etc. I think HD DVD has some good legs to run on here. If they play their cards right, we may have a winner.

They've already sold millions of HD DVD based notebooks & desctop PC's and their is a lot more to come in 2008. HD DVD has one more year to completley turn this around IMO.

It's not a good time to join either if you're looking to select one format, but for getting into HDM then this is a great time to enjoy what Paramount, Universal and Dreamwaorks and (for now) Warner Bros. If you love the movies it's hard to not have all the studios' selection to choose from which is the only reason I'm looking into a BD player.

Boy tell me about it. Look at SAL BD players. None offer any guarantees with their movies! PS3 is the only way it seems to be sure any movie will work.

You know there's one real problem with this move...it doesn't appear that it applies to Canada. All our prices are still at the old MSRP.

A-3 $249-$349 (Futureshop has a $100 off sale)
A-30 $399

This while the Canadian dollar is at the same level as the US dollar. To add insult to injury Amazon.com will not ship players outside of the US.

F I R E S A L E ! ! !

I don't want to hear anyone who buys an HD-DVD player or software after 1/4/08 complain that Warner has screwed them and made their HD-DVD purchase a waste of money.

Since he had an Xbox 360 I recommended the Addon (he's really cheap and the HD DVD players in BB -Canadian location - are pretty expensive) and the PS3 for BD. The last thing he said to the salesperson was "where are the Addons?"

Its amazing that Toshiba can keep up to BD on standalone sales. Just go into any retail store and all they're talking about is BD. The HD DVD players are in a corner somewhere with no one mentioning them. They literally have to sell themselves! If Toshiba can change this then maybe it can start to turn things around. With the new pricing I can't see any reason by BD owners wouldn't be buying an HD DVD player for those great exclusives. Toshiba needs an iron clad contract with Universal and Paramount for exclusivity for the next three years and then it needs to let EVERYONE know about it! Time to start writing big cheques!

One last thought for all those nay sayers. Toshiba does have a support base right now - its obviously not huge, but it is there. Every player it continues to sell increases that base, which is encouraging to the studios, and potentially keeps HD DVD in the game. It may never do as well as BD, but it may stay in this and ultimately that keeps Sony from an all out victory and gives the consumer choice with "honest" pricing.

Who knows the fine details of the contracts each format has with its supporting studios. If Paramount can get out under specific circumstances then maybe Warners can too. Bring on those combo only releases at a DVD price and really stick it to the BD

Selling HD DVD players as good upconverting players at an upconverting player price is very, very smart. Now it needs to sell combo only releases (no DVD) at a DVD price to complete the equation.

Cheers,

Grant
Yep. Every new owner has hundreds of new-to-him titles to choose from. The economy won't help, as we head into the crapper, but it will hurt Sony more.

The only thing that bothers me is.......................where is the TL-Twin or the TL-51. If they don't work with the G1 players (not saying that they don't, however), given the obscene amounts of money being expended now, Toshiba should just agree to a trade-in program and replace them with a new machine. There weren't that many sold in the first place (I had one).

Whilst you continue to support a dead format with your blind xbot fanboy attitude, some poor person may read your posts and be mislead into thinking that investing into HD-DVD at this point is anything other than dead-end investment.

Now you may have enough disposable income to write-off the investment and humor your fanboyish whims, but others may not, and to you let you go on in this vain unchecked is IMO a dereliction of duty for anybody with any sort of moral compass.

So SPAM away.............

Please. Since when did supporting/attacking a format have anything to do with a "moral compass"? You're far more engrossed in this than the people you're rebutting if you truly believe that. HD-DVD is not "dead". It lost the support of a studio. If that's what sort of criterion you're operating by, then Blu died a long time ago when Para/DW went back to HD exclusive.

Look, let's take the tinted shades off for a minute. Neither format is "dead", and neither one has been an astounding success. Yes, Blu has more exclusive studio support, but if someone wants all movies in high def, than they have no choice but to buy into HD-DVD since not all studios are Blu. And HD disks, despite the FUD otherwise, won't stop magically playing on some pre-set date.

this is great! IF that is retail pricing then that means the a3 will be had for $75-100 in stores. the prices are going to be along the lines of a good dvd upconverter.. so basically, toshiba is going to force hd dvd into peoples living rooms with the point that it will make your dvds look almost like hi def and by the way you can also play hd dvds when you so choose... I see it as no different then what Sony did with the ps3.. smart strategy, but they should have done it a long time ago...

Why would they? Warner will continue to support HD DVD for another 4 months where at that time they will deside whether they are going to stick with HD DVD or BD.
