Default HD DVD execs call BS on Warner's consumer has decided statement

First, Warner claims right thing to end the format war since it was affecting SD DVD sales...

Next they claim the poor economy made them do it...

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...cc9844f4f9e97c

Now, they're doing layoffs due to the writer's strike (my condolenses to those affected)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...cc9844f4f9e97c

Their fellow execs are calling BS.

http://www.contentagenda.com/blog/15...800019780.html

Quote:
HD DVD backers at CES expressed deep frustration over Warner’s move, not only because it could mean their side looses but because they still have grave doubts about Blu-ray.

“None of the facts have changed,” one studio exec said. “The problems that existed [with Blu-ray] in December still exist. They didn’t go away because Warner changed sides.”

Among those, in the exec’s view, are disc manufacturing constraints, high costs and high consumer prices.
“I think the days of falling prices are over,” another studio exec said. “The hardware is going to be $300, and discs are going to be $27. We’ll see if the consumer buys it.”

They also don’t buy Warner’s stated reason for its move: a purported clear consumer preference for Blu-ray evident in sales data and consumer research from the fourth quarter.

“What consumers?” one HD DVD exec asked, sarcastically. “The numbers aren’t there to show a preference.”

One non-studio HD DVD backer offered a bet that, come Dec. 31, 2008, the numbers still won’t be there for Blu-ray, even if Toshiba were to fold tomorrow.

Could be, but I don't think that Blu prices will remain $300 and $27, even if Toshiba folds the tent and goes home.

Not only will the vast majority of Americans not buy at those prices, neither will I, and home theater is a major hobby/passion of mine.

Blu prices will come down, or it will never be any more mainstream than LD was.

In the UK $300.00 is £150.00 so we would definately buy into Blu-Ray at those prices. We will be paying around $500.00 for a player and $30.00 for a movies on a good day over here.

If you want to see Blu-Ray prices come well bellow $300 than we are looking at a late 2009 to 2010 date for that type of pricing. And if Toshiba was to fold, BD will only go up in price including the movies

If they do that, they will NEVER sniff replacing DVD. They will indeed be the new LD.

Sorry, I can't agree. I think there will be 1.1 Blu players available for under $300 by end of this year. Perhaps not under $200, though.

You are just spreading FUD now. The Funai has already been announced to be lower than $300 and the Phillips will surely be below $300 by Christmas time 2008.

I agree there. When there's no one else to compete with they can establish whatever price they want. Look what Microsoft did with Windows that drove other companies to make operating systems for a lot cheaper and making Microsoft re-evaluate their offerings. Not like it did too too much, but there's an awful lot more freeware out now that M$ has to compete with and coming up with reasoning why their, for example, $300 software is better than brand X's free open source program.

Not to say that applies to the movie industry that we could start getting free HD movies, but in regard to competition.. if there's no other competitor with a format then they can do whatever they want.

It is nice to finally see a bit of movement back from the HD side. Interesting quotes Super, good find.

And sti, you calling anyone a tool is probably one of the most hypocritical statements I've seen in a while. I'm curious, how is the disk "obsolete" when it still plays?

Here's a quick lesson on marketing speak

Less than $300 = $299.99

because

$300>$299.99

The only reason I might actually like the format war ending is because you will go back to wherever you crawled out of from and cease to come here just to cause trouble.

You're our biggest joke and keep buying into the over priced under performing format you love so much.

I'm willing to bet if we took a straw poll on who was the biggest tool on this forum many would put your name at the top of the list

Granted super xp can be a bit overly optimistic, but at least he comes here to talk to people rather than solely to act like a belligerent, vacuous little waste of space who's only hobby is winding people up online.

If you love blu so much, go watch some.

The rest of us would be overjoyed at not having to read your bile anymore.

You're taking Blu-ray replacing DVD as a forgone conclusion, and so of course they will lower prices to make that already experienced future happen. I don't think it's that clear.
