Just found this article in the January 12th. edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette...
In the TechBusiness segment, the Sound Advice column by Bob Lindrich.
Rumors were floating (according to the article) that just prior to the start of the Consumers Electronics Show that Warner's were about to go HD-DVD exclusive, then at the 11th. hour..."at the11th. hour Fox went to Sony expressing it's concerns about a lack of manufacturing infrastruture and recieved a reported $120 million payout to stay with with Blu-Ray...With no studio joining them on the HD-DVD side Warners hand was forced and it went with Blu-Ray recieving a reported $500 million for doing so".
Interesting article, if true, don't youy think!!
Just thought you'd like to know.

Default Returned my HD DVD player

After waiting and doing the research, I decieded on Hd DVD and got one for Christmas. Then a week later the WB announcement, then Universal is going neutral was the final straw. I returned my player and will sit out the battle until someone wins. I really enjoyed the picture on HD it was stunning and I am itching to buy new titles and players but if the industry can not get their act together and expects me to waste my money on products that may not last, then I will keep my money and wait. SD Dvd on my upconverting player still looks good. The companies obviously did not learn anything from the Betamax battle or from the rapid penetration of the DVD(I think DVD was the fastest accepted consumer product in history-please correct me if I am wrong), due to its standardization. All parties could be rolling in money if they had any brains.

thats my two sense

Lastly; A big thank you to all contributors on this forum for all the information and advice I have read, over the last year and 1/2. I have learned a lot and it was very helpful.

It's sad to me that these damn rumors have the impact they are meant to do. You said you sold your HD DVD player because the Uni decision was the final straw.

The rumors regarding Uni's dedication to HD DVD have come up and Uni said they will continue to supprt HD DVD. Their statement was picked apart so bad because they didn't state "we are exclusive", therefore turned into "They are going neutral!" by so many people on here when no such thing was stated, only surmised. "They didn't state X, so they are doing Y!" or "They didn't react fast enough so that means Z!!"

IMO, that is the danger of rumors; causing the true meaning of Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt (FUD).

I am not picking on you by any means here but making an observation on what I have seen over the last 2 weeks.

Default Re: Return

I returned it more out of frustration and protest, than really anything else. The cost for me isn't prohibitive, it was more the principal. For Blu Ray it is the cost. I will not pay 400-500 for esstential an adult toy. Again why did so many jump to DVD - $$. The first DVD player I bought was a 179 Apex which was a lot for me at the time, but less than the 299 I paid for a four head Vhs just a couple of years earlier, and the benefits were fantastic over VHS.

I do not like being a plaything for multinational billion dolar companies.

I will reassess in a year and if HD DVD is back on top I'll be happy to buy another player. I will not go Blu ray if they are still 400

Until then I'll sit and watch

Thanks for the feedback

I don't blame you at all. This is the mess that the whole HDM business has made to this point.

I have heard from a friend with some inside contact that the source of all the Uni and Paramount rumours has actually been fueled by the BDA using smear tactics against HD DVD, basically kicking it while it's down. It's all "hearsay" and educated guessing that could easily be a likely outcome, but thats no different from me saying that Team X is going to beat Team Y in a match next week.

Good original post, I don't agree with the part that said there is no need for 1080p HD DVD players for those with 720 or 1080i sets.

" No need to spend more money on a player that plays 1080p when they don't need it and their tv doesn't handle it."

I bought the AX2 because of the reports I heard about how well it's processor works in the upconvertion with a 720 set as well as a better picture with HD DVDs over the lower end models. It has a better processor than the A2.
I can't see selling the player unless you sell all the HD DVDs with it. Be too expensive to buy, even if I sold everything at half price.

Here is a guide that provides information about both HD formats to help buyers to make the right choice when it comes to HD movies.
Read the whole article before you form an opinion about buying a unit.

I was not sure where to post this, but here it is, and I consider it be one of the best technical reports on the Blu-ray/HD-DVD formats.

I agree but this is one article the BluBoyz (not referring to the valid supporters here just the fanboys that are here to cause trouble) would wish didn't exist because it doesn't back up their overblown reasons for preferring Blu-Ray over HD DVD, in effect their so called advantages are not really advantages in the real world.
