I will keep my XA2, it makes a great upconverter of all my SDs. I will just buy blu when possible and buy HD-DVD if and only if there is a movie I really like and can't get on blu. Also, have to keep it for my +50 HD-DVD movies I have.

El Despairado, thanks for your insight as well. Actually what's funny is that I really love the extra features, different endings, and bonus content/director commentary, etc on the discs, sometimes as much as the movie itself, although I might not go out and spend more $$ on a 5-disc super platinum edition DVD when I just got the 4-disc platinum edition, if you know what I mean. And I'm all for getting great PQ and AQ, but not so much that it kills my budget. I guess to me certain things matter more than others. For instance, price being the same, what's better? 50" 720p or 42" 1080p? Same price again...A 5-year old Cadillac with 20,000 miles or a brand new Kia with 0 miles. Which is better??? Depends on the person and what suites their needs/expectations. I went 50", others may have gone with the 42" 1080p. BTW....I'd go with the Caddy too

I guess, the way I see it, I'm more than likely going to keep my A3 because it keeps me in the HDM game, and it's an excellent upconverter of SD DVD's. I also figure that by the time Blu-ray gets up to speed with profile 2.0, works out whatever bugs the format has, AND brings the price down to sub $200, it will be quite some time from now. And why go back to my progressive and non-upconvert Daewoo SD player I had before?? I know I know....Daewoo....it wasn't me....my in-laws decided to surprise me with a DVD player a few years back when my trusty Panny bit the dust. According to the Walmart guy they spoke with, this Daewoo player "is the best out there." And, for a whopping $29.99, what a deal !! Uhhhh....yeah....right.....But I digress........

I guess here are my options:

1: Keep the A3.
Pros: Get 5 free HD-DVD movies (for 7 total with Bourne and 300 in the box), and scoop up any other HD-DVD movies that will probably be discounted if HD-DVD dies. Then, it would be a great upconvert SD DVD player, plus it’d play all my HD-DVD movies fine. Just because HD-DVD probably lost, doesn’t mean the player stops working. Plus, I only paid about $10.00 more for this than what a Panasonic upconvert DVD sells for at BestBuy (after cancelling the 3 free additional HD-DVD movies amazon had when buying this player, and got a credit on the 3 movies I never really wanted....thanks slickdeals.net).
Cons: Probably dying format. Eventually, if I get a BD player, it means essentially 2 fancy DVD players in my entertainment center.
Cost: $178.52 - $27.99 - $27.99 - $27.99 = $94.55 but +7 free HD-DVDs

2: Return the A3, get a Panasonic upconvert at BestBuy/Circuit City/retail store (I like Panasonic). The Panny syncs up with my TV, boots up faster, and upconverts all regular DVD’s. And exit the HD-DVD/Blu-ray format war.
Cons: no HDM, stuck in SD world for movies, costs only $10.00 less than keeping the A3 and no 7 free movies.
Cost: $84.99 @ BestBuy but -7 free HD-DVDs

3. Return the A3, hook up my old Daewoo, and be done with it. The kid’s aren’t going to notice the difference in quality, as they are the ones watching DVD’s the most during the day. Pocket the $94.55 and put it eventually towards a blu-ray player. Since I’ll eventually get a blu-ray, it would not make sense to have 2 DVD systems on the shelf….one obsolete to upconvert and play HD-DVDs, and the blu-ray that also upconverts but plays blu-rays.
Cons: No HDM, stuck in SD world for movies.
Cost: Gain $94.55 but -7 free HD-DVDs

I guess basically if there was some guarantee Blu-ray fixed their issues, came out with profile 2.0, and every studio backed them and re-released previous HD-DVD movies on Blu-ray, all for a sub $200.00 entry fee, then it'd be great. A buddy of mine was trying to get me to go blu with a PS3. His thinking....it's among the least expensive BD players out there, and it comes with a "free" video game system. Although I'm an Xbox360 fan/owner, if the blu-ray portion of the PS3 is as good as the standalone BD players out there, I might just do that, for the "free" game system included.

Thanks again for everyone's comments. Nice to see what everyone is doing and what their thinking is.

Keep it HDM in some sense at least! The A3 is a good upconverter (not spectacular but probably better than reasonably priced dvd players that upconvert).

If you can swing spending some extra money, Funai will have a 1.1 BD player out in Q2, expected to MSRP at $299. That means it should be cheaper than that street price, possibly around $250 relatively soon after release. The only reason you would need a 2.0 player is if you plan to use internet enabled special features. A 1.1 player will still give you all your featurettes, alternate endings, commentary, Picture in Picture commentary, interactive games etc.

With Paramount and Universal announcing within two months that they are going blu, the real question is, "How many of you guys plan on staying on the Titanic now that we've hit an iceberg and will be completely sunk by 2 a.m.?" I've heard dumber questions than that which you've asked, but not within the last fifty years.

Are you talking about people refusing to buy Blu-Ray, or people that simply own HDDVD and will keep using it? I own both formats, and I really don't see any point in selling my player and movies second hand. I'd rather keep it, plus even when Para and Uni goes neutral (I believe it will happen), it will still take time before some of the movies they released on HDDVD will come to Blu-Ray.

I went purple during "Black Friday" I only spent a $100.00 bucks, so I don't feel I have lost anything. I only have two HD discs (Bourne Ultimatum, Transformers) I was only buying the ones that were not available on Blu. I really like the player and I plan on keeping it.

Actually, your question is that of the BD fanboy stuff. Nothing is certain and you are only staing an opinion!

Could be many months, same for al lof Uni's releases... please stop with the "Hurry, get of fthat sinking ship" posts.

Irritating crap such as it is.

I too am keeping my XA2 and A2 (backup/bedroom unit). Also, all my current 92 titles will be staying. If Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks keep releasing HD DVD, I'll keep buying.

I also will continue to add HD DVD titles as normal until the supply dries up. If/when that happens, I'lll be looking for fire sales to pick up marginal titles.

I'm gonna project that, assuming HD DVD fades out in 2008, that I'll add BR in either late 2008 or early 2009, if it gets its profile and price where I want.

If i thought I could sell my 360 add on without shipping, and not have much hassle with doing this, i would sell it and instead get a (1080p) standalone for ~$100. I'm planning on keeping 300, shreck, transformers, matrix, my south park disc & happy feet no matter what. The other discs? I'd consider getting rid of them; im not too attached to them.

I own an A1 & A2 player. I bought a A3 player but my friend wanted it so I sold it at cost to him. I own over 50+ HD DVDs but have not counted them, so they will always be useful with my players for great PQ/SQ. Since I also own a PS3, but feel BD may likely be niche, I have stopped buying them as of Friday. I will be renting movies for the foreseeable future.

I quickly looked at the BD player offerings again including the new announced ones at CES, and they are all (except the Panny BD50) excluding the HD audio decoders in them now. That means I will have to replace my Denon HDMI receiver yet again after only one year and i do not care much for Onkyo HT receivers anyway. No way the wife would be happy about 3 receivers in 3 years.

With only 42% of BD titles having LPCM lossless soundtracks now, that means I would be stuck with standard DD/DTS without the HD audio decoders in the player. Judging buy the trend on BD movies to move away from LPCM and moving to HD codecs, I would loose out on the HD audio otherwise. I guess the BD CE companies who make receivers are finally going to get their receiver sales boost now.

Netflix for ever now!

I'l keep my D3, because there will be 500 titles available to still be purchased on HD DVD. In time, many of these titles will probably be discounted and would be cheaper than buying the same titles on Blu, when available.
