I am definately keeping my A1 and my A30, along with the 76 HD DVD
movies and five more on the way. Just snagged the Blade Runner
collection yesterday. Yup.. I will continue to buy HD DVD as long as
they are available.

No, those aren't my movies (although I probably have 2/3 of them or so). Those are the HD DVD exclusive titles. My point is, that's a shitload of titles to throw away access to just for the sake of panicking and selling your player because someone tells you to.

Keeping my player. Keeping my movies. Will buy more movies if there are some I want and will likely buy a second player.

I hear ya! That was why I posted that "Don't Give Up" thread. I know the BD fans want us to drop the HD DVD completely and surrender to the inevitable. I'd tell peopel looking to get into HDM to be think twice.. but to do these panic sales??

Ummm...

Honestly, I think it is basically stupid for HD DVD owners to stop buying HD DVD's. Your player and all these titles are going to continue working, looking and sounding as good as they ever did prior to January 4th, 2008 and they will most likely do so for at least 10 years after June 1st 2008... The AQ and PQ will still be the same as Blu-ray, therefore HD DVD will not be "obsolete" because of this announcement. It really only becomes obsolete when something better comes along, which will render Blu-ray obsolete too. Plus, a lot of these titles aren't going to show up on Blu-ray for a good while, and you never know, some may never find their way to Blu-ray. So why not continue to get HD DVD titles if you were in this simply because you enjoy HD movies??? What harm can possibly come to you?

I can see feeling the need for a possibly picking up a Blu-ray player too, but quitting HD DVD cold turkey is kinda pointless.

It's kinda like getting married. Are you all going to stop looking ? I doubt it...it's impossible !

You'll always remember the first...hopefully the worst.

Not with HD DVD though sadly...the best did not (yet) prevail in this contest

peace

With 20 hd dvd's in my possession and a great playing A2 that I purchased for $99 I would be a fool to get rid of anything. I will play these titles and prolly buy some more at substantial discounts if/when stores online have fire sales. Heck I'll even buy another player just in case this one goes down.

HD DVD will live many moons in my house!

Keeping everything apart from Heroes and Hotel Babylon. I want my TV series to be on the same format, can buy Blu-ray Hotel Babylon as soon as I fancy rewatching it, and Heroes, well to be honest, I didn't find it that spectacular anyway and certainly can't see me watching it over and over again as I do most my TV series box sets.

As for the Hardware, I will be monitoring the market for a highly discounted high end stand alone player assuming the 2nd Samsung Dual Format player fails to materialize (I'm currently hoping there will be a chipped Dual format player for multi region Blu-ray).

On the movie front, I will continue to buy all the titles I want on HD DVD, by the time they are no longer worth owning, Blu-ray will have been replaced by something else anyway, therefore I don't see it as a waste of money buying HD DVD titles, I do hope many of them will now start to dramatically drop in price however.

I'm keeping mine... It works great... I'm also going to pick up at least one more player for another room in my house... I see no reason to ditch it...

If you decide to get a blu-ray player, based on what you said about not being too picky on PQ and AQ, I would guess you also don't care too much about special features, etc that you might find on a disc? If that's the case, than any current Blu-ray player will probably suffice for you, but you may want to make sure it is Profile 1.1 at least.
Thanks for your comments everyone. Much appreciated.

El Despairado, thanks for your insight as well. Actually what's funny is that I really love the extra features, different endings, and bonus content/director commentary, etc on the discs, sometimes as much as the movie itself, although I might not go out and spend more $$ on a 5-disc super platinum edition DVD when I just got the 4-disc platinum edition, if you know what I mean. And I'm all for getting great PQ and AQ, but not so much that it kills my budget. I guess to me certain things matter more than others. For instance, price being the same, what's better? 50" 720p or 42" 1080p? Same price again...A 5-year old Cadillac with 20,000 miles or a brand new Kia with 0 miles. Which is better??? Depends on the person and what suites their needs/expectations. I went 50", others may have gone with the 42" 1080p. BTW....I'd go with the Caddy too

I guess, the way I see it, I'm more than likely going to keep my A3 because it keeps me in the HDM game, and it's an excellent upconverter of SD DVD's. I also figure that by the time Blu-ray gets up to speed with profile 2.0, works out whatever bugs the format has, AND brings the price down to sub $200, it will be quite some time from now. And why go back to my progressive and non-upconvert Daewoo SD player I had before?? I know I know....Daewoo....it wasn't me....my in-laws decided to surprise me with a DVD player a few years back when my trusty Panny bit the dust. According to the Walmart guy they spoke with, this Daewoo player "is the best out there." And, for a whopping $29.99, what a deal !! Uhhhh....yeah....right.....But I digress........

I guess here are my options:

1: Keep the A3.
Pros: Get 5 free HD-DVD movies (for 7 total with Bourne and 300 in the box), and scoop up any other HD-DVD movies that will probably be discounted if HD-DVD dies. Then, it would be a great upconvert SD DVD player, plus it’d play all my HD-DVD movies fine. Just because HD-DVD probably lost, doesn’t mean the player stops working. Plus, I only paid about $10.00 more for this than what a Panasonic upconvert DVD sells for at BestBuy (after cancelling the 3 free additional HD-DVD movies amazon had when buying this player, and got a credit on the 3 movies I never really wanted....thanks slickdeals.net).
Cons: Probably dying format. Eventually, if I get a BD player, it means essentially 2 fancy DVD players in my entertainment center.
Cost: $178.52 - $27.99 - $27.99 - $27.99 = $94.55 but +7 free HD-DVDs

2: Return the A3, get a Panasonic upconvert at BestBuy/Circuit City/retail store (I like Panasonic). The Panny syncs up with my TV, boots up faster, and upconverts all regular DVD’s. And exit the HD-DVD/Blu-ray format war.
Cons: no HDM, stuck in SD world for movies, costs only $10.00 less than keeping the A3 and no 7 free movies.
Cost: $84.99 @ BestBuy but -7 free HD-DVDs

3. Return the A3, hook up my old Daewoo, and be done with it. The kid’s aren’t going to notice the difference in quality, as they are the ones watching DVD’s the most during the day. Pocket the $94.55 and put it eventually towards a blu-ray player. Since I’ll eventually get a blu-ray, it would not make sense to have 2 DVD systems on the shelf….one obsolete to upconvert and play HD-DVDs, and the blu-ray that also upconverts but plays blu-rays.
Cons: No HDM, stuck in SD world for movies.
Cost: Gain $94.55 but -7 free HD-DVDs

I guess basically if there was some guarantee Blu-ray fixed their issues, came out with profile 2.0, and every studio backed them and re-released previous HD-DVD movies on Blu-ray, all for a sub $200.00 entry fee, then it'd be great. A buddy of mine was trying to get me to go blu with a PS3. His thinking....it's among the least expensive BD players out there, and it comes with a "free" video game system. Although I'm an Xbox360 fan/owner, if the blu-ray portion of the PS3 is as good as the standalone BD players out there, I might just do that, for the "free" game system included.

Thanks again for everyone's comments. Nice to see what everyone is doing and what their thinking is.

I didn't realize the XA2 already has seen an end of manufacturing date. New inventory on it is only supposed to last until 2Q 2008!!! I don't know what I would do without my XA2? I wish I could justify purchasing an additional one right now, but I am holding out to see what shakes out for HD DVD, as I may need a Blu-ray player too.

I'm thinking of buying a spare XA2 myself, if the price is right...
