Arrow Paid downloads a thing of the past

Paid downloads a thing of the past

Quote:
After years in which paid downloads saw little traction, Hollywood is focused on ad-supported streaming in '08.Top showbiz execs at the Consumer Electronics Show largely agreed on that point both in a panel sponsored by Variety and as reflected in the new initiatives they unveiled on Monday, the first official day of the Vegas tech confab.

Execs overseeing digital distribution for ABC Disney TV, Fox, Warner Bros. and Paramount joined Variety prexy-publisher Charlie Koones for the panel. Most of the talk about 2008 focused on high-quality on-demand streaming, from Paramount's "Jackass 2.5" to Fox and NBC's Hulu.com to ABC's media player.

"People online want to watch for free, because they can get content for free via piracy," said Fox digital media prexy Dan Fawcett. "Downloading to own and keep on a PC seems to be losing out. People like to watch on an impulse."

If this is anything like the ads that accompany the beginning of every Disney disc you pop in, no thanx.

It's more than that.

All we hear about is that Downloads are going to come and replace this and that and DNL's are the future.

Meanwhile - they are doing SQUAT and the streaming (realtime) On Demand programming is where it is at. (VOD)

I think it is going to be that new netflix STB that you can get any movie, HD or SD instead of having to get disks shipped to you every month. You have their entire catalog at the touch of a button for the same monthly rates as now. How can you beat that. Great idea IMO

I think I speak for most of us when I say I want my movies on a tangible piece of something that I can actually hold, not stored on an HDD somewhere. While I like that for rentals, I want my movie collection. And not ripped if I can help it. I'll pay the money for a professionally distributed item at a reasonable price. I'll rip and pirate and burn discs if they do this.

They need to offer both.

That is how I feel too. I mean the download thing is a cool idea and all, but I like to have movies in my hands, as stupid as it sounds. I know it takes up space but I love having the disk in hand when it comes to movies.

I think that some people don't feel that have something real unless they can hold it and I used to think like that too. When MP3s first came on the scene I wasn't that keen. No cover art, just a line of text on a monitor and a sound from the speakers. Now though I have cover art and can see my virtual albums on screen, read the song titles and see all the detail, I used to get on the CD cover.

I can take them anywhere I want too just by clicking a button and syncronising an album or play list to my pocket PC, have them on several appliances at once too if I want. No more carrying around a single CDs in a case and a player in some cases.

We'll get used to the concept of virtual movies just like I did with virtual cds.

I burn audio CDs of my MP3s. For backup and also for listening.

I would not mind if they did not expire and I could bring them to watch to other peoples houses. Maybe they should put USB 3.0 on all of the TVs and you can put the movies on an external USB 3.0 drive. That would do it.

Each to their own but to me that is a step into the past. I don't see the need to burn anything anymore. If I need my music to be portable I have my pocket PC. At home I have my main Vista Media Centre PC, my 360 to which I can stream music or my laptop which can access my music library either via my wireless network or directly off the hard drive.

I was more selective with the HD movies I bought, although I DO have quite a few now just from December alone. I have always been a fan of OWNING the movies as they were cheaper than going to the theater anyway and much more convenient.

This war has soured me quite a bit on ever investing in physical media again though. This why even as a PS3 owner I may not buy anymore BD movies. Unless standalone 2.0 BD players get to around $200.00 by end of 2008, I think it will end up being niche, and I am not getting stuck with TWO dead formats.

I am Netflixing everything now and will just go from 3 at a time to 4 at a time for a while.

Im hoping for what you described....It will be a WMD for DVD/HD-DVD/BLU-Ray....and an overall victory for us as consumers. They can put all the advertising they want before the movie...as long as I can fast foward through it.
