Amir from MS pretty much let the cat out of the bag a couple of days ago. On AVS he was asked about the HD-DVD virtual developer tool MS had created for the 360. He was specifically asked if HDi could work online. He verified it could, and speculated in the future you could see "virtual" DVDs complete with menus, bonus features, etc.

PS At this point I have NO doubt MS will broker a deal to manufacture an Add-On Blu-Ray player for the 360. They have absolutely nothing to lose.

And its not like the DLC is exclusive. I am sure PSN will have access to sony movie downloads for PS3. amazon and itunes prob have access to the sony media as well.

If Microsoft is so interested in the success of HD DVD, why wouldn't they throw money around to secure studios for HD DVD? They do it for downloads. I know the answer just a rhetorical thought.

I think MS was more interested in getting in the door with VC-1 and HDi than they cared about HD-DVD specifically. Just look at the Paramount move, MS offered no cash and gave no incentives to Paramount to make their jump, it was all Toshiba.

MS cares about MS and their shareholders, not a disc format.

MS looks out for MS, it's business, the BDA were only looking out for themselves with the Warner deal too.

I suspect Microsoft developed that 360 based HD DVD emulation software (for the HDi testing etc) more for doing virtual HD DVD downloads via the marketplace, for permanant ownership of content or some crap.

That'll come in more for the PC end of the market though.

I mentioned earlier that M$ is more like an LLP (limited liability partner) with HD-DVD. While they have a weighted interest in HD-DVD, it still is toshiba's technology. As we saw during the press conference, M$ has many big business interests occurring simultaneously. I am sure M$ helped toshiba and HD-DVD financially, but there is only so much they will spend.

True. And one of the techs M$ mentioned is connecting HP PCs to HDTVs. It makes more sense to download movies to vista based PCs with its easily upgradeable storage than a game console. Supposedly wireless hardware will be announced at CES that will allow HD devices to connect wirelessly to HDTV.
