As I said Sony is in trouble if they don't get that 2.0 player out and sell it for cheap.

Who else sold HD DVD players in 07?

Wouldn't that chart indicate a slight lead for BD SALs?

We know LG only sold like 4 of the DF players.

So at best, that chats shows a 50:50 SAL BD:HDDVD. Pending the AO sales and the PS3 for BD sales negate each other (which is more than fair to say)

50% SAL Market Share for Toshiba is huge, when you consider attach rates.

HD DVD had an advantage in attach rates with only 50% of the SAL Market Share, despite Blu-ray having an equal SAL marketshare AND the 10 Million PS3's, lol.

Damn, BD SALs have outsold HD DVD SALs when they're selling for $100-$300 more?!?! Looks like Toshiba's strategy of infiltrating the market with cheap SALs is not working. And it seems Toshiba's market share actually shrunk in the fourth quarter since according to NPD in September, HD DVD had 54% of the SAL market YTD. I guess this is what Warner was saying when they said BD SALs were outselling HD SALs even when they were priced at a premium. I hate to say it, but bye HD DVD.

Yeah, that's really surprising about the SALs.

I think Warner got this information about a week ago Blu-Ray beats HD DVD at their own game...

It's rather surprising to me. I thought that Toshiba was outselling BD SALs about 60:40, but Sony and Samsung (especially Sony) have been very aggressive in their pricing and promotions, particularly in December. I think WB may have been impressed by the December BD win in standalone sales. Amazon has had some incredible HD DVD player sales, but most people are buying from Best Buy, CC and Walmart, where BD actually had the better sales in December. Furthermore BD had better visibility (notably at Best Buy) with their displays and endcaps.

I don't think the 2 free movies in the box helped sell as many players as hoped for. Maybe a lot of people weren't even aware of it and just looked at the price.

I walked through both BB and Circuit City a couple of times in December. I didn't see any big endcaps or signs or whatever promoting HD DVD players. No big signs mentioning the 2 free movies included or the 5 free via mail.

That my friend is SPOT ON!

Other than the fact that the HD-DVD promo group seems to have it's head up it's ass, the pimple-faced-Playstation fan-teenage salesperson at the corner electronics store has the most effect on fence-sitting consumer.

I can just imagine the sales pitch: customer:"I just bought an HDTV and heard about high-def players. Which one should I buy?"

salesidiot:"Blu-ray kicks ass, HD-DVD sucks. Besides I saw Spiderman 3 on my new PS3 and it is awsome dude!"

Sony and Blu-Ray definitely had better advertising than Toshibs and HD-DVD. Everywhere I went where stores had HD players, Soy/Blu-ray was well represented. It kind of felt like a one horse race in some places. Went to Walmart about a month ago, and all the HDTVs were playing a blu-ray advertisement. It looked very impressive.

Toshiba failed to promote there side effectively, IMO.

Come on now. If they don't see the product, it's not there....and salesboy has no control over that. That's a corporate call. And, to be honest, the profit margin for BR is larger per unit.

People that are investing have money to burn, as such, they'll buy more TVs, cables, furniture, etc. If price sensetivity is even a SLIGHT factor for an HDer they'll but less, so the store moves less of everything.

It shouldn't be a surprise that, if given a choice, a retailer would rather move Blu.

I'm curious, does that chart include PS3s or just dedicated standalones?

Why do people have to be outfitting an auditorium to be interested in high definition?
