Me crystal ball tells me that DF players will be the talk of the town.

Toshiba will still be the only CEM engineering HD DVD players

BDA will have a 1.0 player with a $199 MSRP. Sammy 1400 and/or BDPS300

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung or LG dipped their toe in the water of the HD DVD stand alone pool. Given that they already had to make their HD DVD certified dual format players HD DVD spec. They might have seen the volumes of sales HD DVD players have vs BD stand alones and pondered if it's worth a look.

I rent a lot so I just want a SAL that will play scratched discs.

From what I hear from level headed purple people, one does not yet exist.

A Sammy would be a tasty addition to my HiFi!

I don't believe there will be a Studio Shift (Not the right place to announce such a move IMO) but I do believe Samsung & LG have HD DVD SAL players to present. Non DF that is.

Now late January to early February, that is a different story, I see a Major Studio Shift IMO.

LG has revealed a DF home theater at "astonishingly affordable prices", and they will have more offerings in the same market later in the year.

New Generation LG Audio Challenges Industry at CES 2008

Seoul, Korea, December 27, 2007 – LG Electronics has announced a bold initiative to become a major player in the global audio market.

The Korean electronics giant will demonstrate two new home theater systems at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show. Both systems were personally tuned by audio legend Mr. Mark Levinson, who has been working with LG for the past year.

Under his direction, the company's engineering team has developed a range of high-performance/high-value products that promise to send tremors through a complacent industry. "These systems are so good for so little money, it's shocking," Levinson confided. "Even the most jaded audio veterans are going to be completely knocked out."

The two new systems are the AP3133 and the LHT888. The AP3133 is a traditionally-styled high-definition AV home theater system with medium-height multi-driver floorstanding loudspeakers, center channel speaker, surrounds, and powered subwoofer. The system includes a 7.1-channel AV receiver with 150Watts X 7 "ICEpower" output stage, Burr-Brown PCM 1796 24bit/192kHz DAC, multi-input HDMI switching with full 1080p upscaling, HD Radio capability, and Audessey Auto Room Multi EQ Adjustment. The system also includes an LG Super Blu player, dual-format BD and HD DVD player.

For more décor-conscious movie-and-music fans, LG will demonstrate its LHT888 home theater system, a foray into stunning contemporary design. Inspired by the slim elegant form of the champagne glass, LHT888 loudspeakers feature multiple drivers in parabolic housings, each with a tapered integrated pedestal. The system includes a 700W 5.1-channel DVD receiver with full HD 1080p upscaling, USB Media Plus, HDMI output, LG SIMPLINK™ multi-device control (HDMI-CEC), and multi-format playback compatibility—DviX, MP3, JPEG, MPEG, etc.

The AP3133 and LHT888 are merely precursors for more ambitious LG products to come. These new home theater systems will ship at astonishingly affordable prices, permanently establishing LG as the audio leader.

Retail prices will be announced at CES.

LG will make a formal announcement at a press conference the first day of the show, on Jan. 6 at 8 a.m. in the Venetian's Casanova room 501. Demonstrations will take place all day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 6th, in the Venetian's San Polo room 3501B.

G4TV, 7PM-9PM (eastern) Jan 7th and Jan 8th. Coverage of first day/second day.

No coverage for the 6th. Though they'll probably put something up on the Xbox 360 video marketplace (they usually do).

NetFlix, LG to Sell Net TV Box

The set-top is expected to also play Blu-ray and HD DVDs.

Washington, D.C. (January 3, 2008) -- NetFlix and LG Electronics are expected to launch a set-top that will deliver NetFlix's movies over the Internet to the TV.

The set-top is also expected to play both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper did not say whether NetFlix's movies would be available in high-def, but NetFlix rents Blu-ray and HD DVDs. The New York Times reports this morning that the Net TV offering will not include high-def content at launch.

LG's dual-format HDTV player.

WSJ reports that the NetFlix/LG box is expected to be available in the second half of this year. No pricing was revealed, but LG now sells a dual-format HDTV disc player for $999 (although it's cheaper online.)

NetFlix now offers a streaming video service at its web site, which is available at no extra cost above the company's standard monthly fee. WSJ says the same pricing structure will be used for rentals on the LG set-top.

The NetFlix/LG set-top will be another in a growing field of devices aimed at delivering Internet video to the television. Apple introduced its Apple TV device last spring, but sales have lagged to poor picture quality, a lack of high-def content and other issues.

WSJ reports that NetFlix plans to offer its films over the Net via other devices in the next year, including video game consoles.

NetFlix, the DVD rental service, now has roughly seven million subscribers by mail.

TL-51 is an advancement for HD DVD to show that the format scales. But the premise of HD DVD does not depend on it. It never has. DL-34 may get productized though and the yields for that won't be different than HD DVD-30. HD DVD has done what it needed to do to prove its case: dual layer with combo produced, the market and readily manufacturable. That's it
I doubt we will see any news regarding TL51. Truthfully, Twin Discs and HD DVD DL 34GB are more important than TL51.

Looks like wireless FPTVs are going to be a big thing at CES.
