Microsoft has two chances to announce an Xbox 360 with a HD DVD drive in it:

Sunday Jan6th - Bill Gates gives the opening address to officially start CES

Jan. 14th - the video games show (whatever it is called)

Isn't it the VGA (Video Game Awards)?

I'd highly expect CES if it were to happen.
CES is more prestigious than a video game show (it's not even E3 so it doesn't matter), Both HD DVD and Blu camps are present, Gates is giving the opening keynote and almost all the attention from the HDM world is focused on CES.
If Microsoft introduces this product, you can bet they have carefully studied the situation to offer HD DVD enabled Xbox360; you know what I mean

It'll more than likely also be a stinker of a game. Sorry, I ain't falling for "Killzone" being a good game more than once. I'll believe it when I see it. As for the visuals of Killzone 2, when they actually show something that is undoctored (they've been called out not just once, but twice for tarting up screenshots/movies for making it look better than it actually does) I'll start taking note.

Simple question . . .

Will MS sell more 360's if there is a HD DVD drive in it?

I think the answer is yes as long as they still provide the 360 alone or with add-on drives as well.

It'd more be a prestige thing I think. At the moment, wit hBlu-ray built in, Sony have bragging rights. If Microsoft get a model out there, with internal HD DVD and so HD movie viewing out of the box, it's one bullet point taken away from Sony's "Advantages" list.

You can't answer that question without knowing the and price and specifications of the product. If it is a good value priced competitive, they can sell well. Like HDMI enabled Xbox360, they start with one HD DVD enabled X360 and during a 1.5 year transition they update all models to HD DVD drives once the price of the drives become low enough.

Amir in AVS said one day HD DVD becomes a bonus function of the product you buy. This can certainly be applied here,

This late in the lifespan- I doubt it. Some will rebuy for it.

I guess it really depends on the price point and the build quality.

The Xbox 360, in it's present state, is known for failure. I know, I'm on my 4th since launch.

So 4 of you have answered my question - but I see no compelling reason to add it. It will be more expensive than a DVD equipped 360 just because of the more expensive parts . . and paying for a license that people may not use the console for.

IMO - the key is to get the price down near the Wii . . . not up near the PS3.

They can reduce the price of Arcade SKU close to Wii even more; the thing is X360 doesn't require HD DVD so they can have multiple SKUs for different markets.

This is why I think it'll be a CE manufactured Set Top Box rather than a games console.

That is what is being hinted at. A Toshiba HD DVD Player/Xbox 360 Game Console . . .

Which could be a real winner. Fits in a rack just like any other CE piece of equipment.

Why?

People want an Xbox 360

People want a PS3

nowhere near as many people want Blu-ray, but have to have it with their PS3

nowhere near as many people want HD DVD... oh wait... they don't HAVE to have it with their Xbox 360...

I really doubt it'd sell anywhere near as well as the PS3 does right now. Definitely a niche market, but also one worth extending into.
