Get over yourself, the PS3 is a game system. We are talking about Stand Alone Player sales, you know the once where people buy soley for movie watching, not gaming.

I think there would be more stand-alone Bluray players sold if there was no PS3. Myself, I would have purchased one if there had not been a bluray enabled PS3. But that setback is IMO worth it as it Gives a much greater amount of bluray players out there compared to not having the PS3 for sale.

I disagree. The PS3 is a gaming system AND a Bluray player. I swear I can see bluray movies with it, yes yes !

If we have members here using the PS3 as movie players then it makes perfectly sense that there are alot of consumers doing the same. They definitely should be considered a BD player as well. The question is, how many actual units are being utilized as a movie player? Maybe someone should take a independent poll at BB and CC!

Savvy?
No. The PS3 even with the old 60 gig, had only 95% compatibility with PS2 games. The new 80 gig has software compatibility for about 80%, the new 40 gig has 0.

I am too tired of this argument to show all the math but being a bean counter by trade, I am personally thinking that the attach rate of both formats is about equal and THERE is where you get the actual number of PS3s used as a BD player also. Even if the attach rates are not equal, it would give us the average effect of what the PS3 BD movie average is. Using that equal attach rate scenario that puts the PS3 at about 20% as frequent BD players, which would tie in with the actual movie sales numbers of each format. I am not talking about the Nielsen numbers but the actual sales count stated at 2.5 million for HD DVD & 4 million for BD.

Three-quarters of a million Americans now own a dedicated HD DVD player or Xbox 360 add-on drive, the HD DVD Promotional Group said.

To date, 750,000 HD DVD devices have been sold in North America, the organisation said, citing "retailer reports and other point of sale data". It pointed to busy post-Thanksgiving purchasing as one of the reasons for the growth in sales of HD DVD kit.

Seven months ago, in April, the HD DVD Promotional Group announced that hardware sales had passed the 100,000 mark - a year after the first players went on sale. By June, the total had risen to just 150,000. So, two months to increase 50 per cent, then five months to increase by 400 per cent.

Lee, sometimes you make posts refuting something but don't explicitly state your point. What exactly are you disputing here? The article does state that HD DVD players total 750,000.

Misleading errr... stupid thread
Huh? The article states how many PS3s were sold too. So a thread about an actual number of HD DVD SALs, BD SALs, and PS3s that were sold during BF isn't worthwhile to you?

Me 2 on Black Friday sales. Toshiba paid me to take an A2 off of there hands. Sold me an A2 for $98 bucks, then tossed in 5 movies at the going rate ($29.99), so the way me see's it, Toshiba paid me roughly $50 bucks to enjoy HD DVD. Player works fine - without a f/w upgrade. As long as the movie plays, me considers it finished. Same goes for me BD burner/player - as long as the movie plays/burns - me considers it a finished product. Thank You Toshiba for paying me to enjoy HD DVD. But me true enjoyment comes from me Bd burner!!!!! Much more applicable to today's market.

Oh I can't wait to start burning HD DVD's or BD's, but it's too expensive for me at the moment. I'm used to getting single-layer DVD's at 25 cents or dual-layer DVD's at 75 cents a pop... the $11 single-layer BD disc just ain't worth it to me yet.

The 40 gig ps3 is NOT compatible with any previous console games. You buy that one, you're playing ps3 games only or bd, keep ps2 handy if you want to play those games.

Yup, we all enjoy the cheap DVD +/- R's and DL's today, and slightly scoff at the price of the BD or HD DVD recordables. But what we must keep in mind is that this is still cutting edge, or that we be early adopters of new tech. With BD's edge in the burning market and the total lack of HD DVD burners, me see's BD recordables in the $7-$8 dollar range by this time next year. Even at today's prices, a 3 pack of DL SD disc's is about $11 bucks (Walmart) or about $.43 cents a gig. A 25 gig BD disc at $11 bucks works out to $.44 cents a gig. So for a penny a gig more, to me, it be well worth it!!! BTY,,,the HD DVD recordables work out to about $1.36 per gig, making BD much more affordable!!!!

Though why not njust stick to 3xDVD or whatever? Seeing as that gets you the cheap cheap media and the bandwidth required for HD content.
