Default My observations while at Disney World the last 8 days

So I just returned from 8 days at Walt Disney World tonight and this is what I noticed around the Disney parks and downtown Disney. BR vs HD DVD Disney parks had no BR media none not a single movie on BR in the parks. DTD in The World of Disney only had At Worlds end nothing else. The Toy Shop which houses all teh games and DVD's for Disney has a 6 foot high 4 foot wide section dedicated to BR it only held 12 titles and the ad running on the Samsung display was old and outr of date and even included Paramount as a BR studio. It also had a caption for 1000 BR titles by year end. So it displayed some old out of date info and didn't house much in the way of titles. Now on to the Virgin Megastore. BR had on set of 4 6 foot bunkers for BR and 2 sets of 4 6 foot bunkers for HD DVD. Aparently the Brits that visit Disney buy movies by the truckload as it works out much much cheaper for them there while on holidays than at the Virgin stores at home. Now for prices the titles in the Toy Shop averaged 32-39 dollars and the Virgin store was the same on BR titles and all but the box sets for HD DVD's were 29.99. So for a format that Disney is supporting 100% currently they certainly aren't showing much support for it in probably the largest possible retail area with over 100,000 people passing through the doors per day atleast (this being the Disney parks and downtown Disney). I wanted to get some pics of the ad running ar the Toy shop but every time we went to DTD we didn't have the camera and when I did have it with me today the shops were not open yet and we were headed to the airport before the stores opened up.

I think this shows us that us forum posters take this war more seriously than many of the studios/player mfg do.

Disney World is not a video store. (I used to work there in my youth ) Why don't you go check out the situation at the Disney Store at the mall, or better yet, a store that makes its business selling videos, like Best Buy or Fry's.

I did that I went to the Virgin Megastore which is dedicated to all things movies and music as I noted in my first post. Even they didn't have much for BR compared to HD DVD. TO be honest what this says for a small section of the area isn't much but for the sheer number of people that are in and out of these stores etc on a daily basis it can add to the numbers of disks bought on the whole.

Is Virgin Megastore notable for their high-def video section anyway? We have one here at a nearby mall, and that was never the first place I thought of for video in general, much less high-def video. Maybe music video. Fry's is still the place to go to for video around here, followed by overpriced Best Buy.

Still, it isn't Virgin's job to promote Disney's format, whether they're leasing space from Disney or not. Virgin is run by a totally different company, and isn't any of Disney's business (unless they were selling porn or weapons or something).

You are correct it isn't Virgins job to promote BR for Disney and they certainly weren't. They had an HD DVD rack as soon as you stepped off teh escalator onto the second floor. It was there full of Universal and Paramount titles. So they were certainly using some prime realestate to show their wears for HD DVD IMHO.

Well that's the biggest thing. Studios aren't making anything off these formats yet. All they care about now is DVD. That is still where the money is at, and it will be that way for a while. It sucks but it is what it is.
