Maybe by game console they meant the XBox since you would have to buy the add on ? The PS3 is all in one.

But WB is looking at things that Toshiba can't control atleast they can't directly control.

What I'd like to know is this: Since the $100 WM sales did so well, WHY isn't there a non-stop sale with the Toshiba players continually at that price?

Those were A2's. You got nothing more than a player with the 5 movie rebate.

The new sale is $198 for an A2 with 10 movies and $298 for an A3 with 12 movies. With each you get to pick 5 HD DVD's at the store and include them in your purchase. 2 more in the A3 box.

12 movies would cost you $240 at Amazon and $300 at BB or CC. So you can see the value that you are getting.

the $98 A2 was a "prime the pump" for HD DVD before the Black Friday sales

Not quite sure, if the XBOX add on is the dominating playback hardware for HD DVD....

Thats what they gotta do again to make the players move.

Who cares about getting the movies? You get movies from net-freakin-flix. You don't need to pay for the movies.

Just give people the $100-150 player and stand the hell back!
I can't believe they aren't doing that.

Does it make too much sense? Hm, we sold 90k players in 3 days, time to stop that.
The future of hd dvd is at stake here.

Now you are assuming that people will not buy HDM movies and only rent them?

Sure we use that as a way to get your "investment" to the lowest possible extreme. But who is doing that? How many HDM owners buy no movies?

And is December over yet? Is it the 24th yet? My calendar says today is 12/7 (Pearl Harbor Day BTW)

Huh? I don't think there is supposed to be any differentation between the two. A game console is a game console. The dividing line between the PS3 and the 360 however, is that everyone that buys the 360 AO does so to watch HDM, which is also why the AO is rightfully counted as a SAL. Not everyone that buys a PS3 does so to watch HDM. In fact, last statistics placed the majority of PS3 owners as not even knowing it has HDM playback capability (how they managed to miss it though is beyond you or me

). So, given this data, WB's statement makes sense.

I do agree with you here though. Low prices and masses of players moving.

Instead of buying out a studio, it'd be sweet to see that money spent on a huge player-moving-sale

Well most people I know don't want to spend roughly $30 on a movie , when they can have 4 to 5 a month with that price using netflix.

I mean it's really that simple.
You buy 3 movies you spend roughly $90. You watch them once in a few months.
I mean, unless you have money to burn, who does that with Blockbuster online and Netflix now?
That's crazy.

I mean if you buy your movies, more power to ya, that's cool, but $30? I don't think so.

If they were half that price, then we got a deal.
I also think that the only way prices will go down on software is if people buy LESS.
The demand goes down, the price goes down.

I know that attitude is not just me, btw.

We all want these formats to get out of the tiny niche format. But the prices are outrageous for movies.
And people brag on all these sites about how many they buy.
That's not a good way to bring down the price.

I would be very interested to see what Toshiba could do if they ran the A3, or equivalent at regular DVD levels. How many of the $100 or so Up-Conversion DVD players do they sell a month? So there are 750,000 HD DVD players in total. What would happen if Tosh ran a few million entry level HD DVD players and rebranded them at $125 as a Up-Converting DVD player, also outputs HD DVDs to 1080i.

They are still selling over 1 million DVD players per month. How many are UP DVD players is a total unknown.

Ok, so we know that regular DVD are selling in the millions per month. Should either format "win" are they both (or either) to the point that you can quickly ramp up production to even say 25% of current DVD player sales?
