Default Blu Ray player at $199

It has been announced, we will have to see if it can allow the blu camp to compete :

Ouch. A drive only like this should be $99 or less. Zero movies (you get 6 with the XBox HD DVD drive, plus a remote) makes this a very poor value imo, plus you need a powerful CPU, HDCP equipped video card and expect to spend up to another $99 for "decent" software to play back BD movies.

That is an internal BD drive for a PC. For people with PC's connected to their HD TV's and with the proper hardware and software . But not quite the answer the BD fans are looking for I would gather.. They should add 5 free movies like they do the rest of the BD players. Perhaps they do, but I didn't see it any place..

This is for a PC drive, you can get HD DVD drives for less then $99, so this $199 BD drive won't have any effect on the War.

This should be posted in the computer or HTPC forum.

This new drive will have minimal impact on the war. However the price isn't too bad for the htpc people who have everything else already.

I'm curious to know which hddvd drive is less than $99 msrp, unless you are comparing apples and oranges. Actually, I'd even be interested in seeing which hddvd drive streets for less than $99. I paid 150 for the hddvd addon a few months ago.

the add on is an external drive

go to amazon and compare the prices of external drives to internal ones and it'll make sense

same as pc memory. Externals always cost more

Damn misleading thread titles... I was hoping this was a standalone unit. Should have known this was too good to be true.

Agreed, misleading thread title. If this was intended to counter the A2's, thank you for playing, better luck next time.

As an HTPC user... YAWN

I've seen announcements for internal Blu-ray drives for $200-$250 since before I got my HD-DVD drive. Unfortunately, I'm STILL waiting for them to materialize. Besides, there are dual format drives that are sporadically available in online stores for $300 that are a much better value than this, and they sell out as fast as they appear. I just have to be in the right place at the right time to order one until the supply side catches up.

Let's get a couple of things straight here:
1. The Xbox hddvd addon has msrp of 179.
2. Yes it is external so in a sense it is a better deal (though if you buy an external enclosore for the BD drive, it only adds 15 dollars - bet MS only paid half of that). So pricing would be MSRP 180 vs roughly MSRP 210 if we want to speculate.
3. Has anyone found an INTERNAL hddvd rom yet, so we can compare apples to apples? I have searched pricegrabber and amazon to no avail. On Newegg, I see LG has a dual (Blu-Ray/HDDVD) drive for 299 though - which is the better deal if you need both and don't already own the ms hddvd addon.

No internal read-only drives for either format yet. Asus (or was it Acer?)announced one several months back, but as usual, it turned out to be vaporware. The only one is that LG dual format drive, which in my opinion is the only way to go.

Does 'bulk' mean the same thing in German that it does in English? Should we get a group together and order a case of these suckers?
