Default blu ray as a storage disc

If I remember correctly. blu ray data is closer to the surface, thereby requiring the coating to protect the data. HD DVD, on the other hand, records the data deeper in the disc thereby not needing the coating. As a home user of possible HD discs to store on. How could blu ray ever be used in the home, because we won't have access to the coating to protect our data. It seems the only good choice for home use is HD DVD since it won't need the coating that blu manufacturers have the benefit of.

Just a thought, it popped into my head and I had to put it in writing.

Default HD DVD as a storage disc

can you find an HD DVD burner for sub-$500 bucks? BD writables at 25gig float around the $12 mark, as do the HD DVD writables but these are only 15 gig. For home burning, BD is the way to go. As for you needing to coat the discs, simply not true. It has been proven that BD discs are slightly more fragile than HD DVD for a multitude of reasons, but to coat them, it simply is not true.

Can you author an HD-DVD or BD video disc? Last I checked the hackers were still working on that.

Isn't the coating already applied by the manufacturer? My understanding is the different manufacturers (Sony, TDK, etc.) have different coatings that they use. The coating is applied at the factory. Your burner burns the data through it I thought.

Yes, in fact the Durabis coating was developed by TDK first for recordable media, not BD-ROM.

30GB HD DVD writables are $19.99, but if you're looking for recordable mass storage for your computer, then BD is the choice between the two at this point.

On the other hand, if you're looking for mass storage for your computer (and not for making Hi-Def discs), there are quite a few alternatives to either Blu-Ray or HD DVD--you can get an external 500GB HDD for less than a quarter the price of a BD burner and ten 50GB BD discs.

For that matter, you can get a 500GB drive for less than half the price of just the ten 50GB BD discs alone.

I don't even think the BD movie studios are using Durabis. I believe that Sony & Disney are using a proprietary formula different from Durabis.

Isn't this the law suit that they have gotten into from a company called Rena - sonse (SP - sounds like) that I believe calls their product "Target." ?

Aren't the HD DVD discs you burn far more compatible with HD DVD PLAYERS though? I was under the impression that it could be very difficult to burn Blu-ray video discs.

What I was getting at is when HD burning reaches the masses as dvd burning has. Interesting if they burn through the coating how does it protect the data since you're going through the coating as well as the disc.

It does not actually "BURN" the coating with the laser. It just focuses past the coating to the dye coating underneath to change it.

Picture HD DVD as the successful DVD & Double Layer DVD. Their are also HD DVD burners all over the place, you just have to look for them.

Such good points, Bob. The way I see it, I can get a TERA byte of hard drive space for what a BD or HD DVD burner costs with blank discs. Yes, a Terabyte ( 1,000,000,000,000) dats a lot.

It's not the size of your storage, it's how you use it.
