Yeah i got stung with that one. The BD version is very poor, it is virtually the same as the upscaled DVD. The rumour is that is just an upscaled master and not true HD. I did find the DTS-HD MA track to be noticeably better than the DVD though so it may still be worth picking up.

There isn't a Halloween that goes by -- because it's my absolute favorite time of the year -- which I don't host an all-night Horror Film Marathon, and it's always a hit. Been doing it for years, and I usually show the same titles, but when the remake of Dawn of the Dead came out on DVD some years back, it was a real hit with people who stopped over my place. Indeed, there's something so charming about that film during Halloween season...

This year, all throughout October, I watched:

Van Helsing
House of Wax (original)
House on Haunted Hill (original & remake)
The Shining
Sleepy Hollow
Dawn of the Dead (original & remake)
Return of the Living Dead
John Carpenter's The Thing
John Carpenter's Village of the Damned
John Carpenter's Christine
John Carpenter's Vampires
John Carpenter's The Fog
The Fog (remake)
The Haunting (remake & original)
From Dusk Till Dawn
The Exorcist
An American Haunting
Friday the 13th (remake)
30 Days of Night
Resident Evil: Extinction

...and too many others to list...

Now...ON Halloween, I ALWAYS do:

John Carpenter's Halloween
Halloween II
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

...and a handful of others, including the recently reviewed Trick 'r Treat, during the all night marathon...

I went to a 24 hour movie marathon once. Only took bathroom and food breaks and went home to sleep. THAT's hardcore.

I did that one day with the extended editions of Lord of the Rings. It took me about 11 hours or so to get through all of them.

Indeed, Mike -- I have often done 24-hour marathons, like Glow, where I would invite everyone I knew, and they would keep coming over throughout the night and into the morning, like on shifts. It was nuts.

That was back in my college days, though...

Thats a great collection of films you have watched there! I especially love The Shining, i believe its the best horror movie ever made IMO. John Carpenters Village Of The Damned and Vampires are also excellent movies which are very underated.

I still think the best horror film ever made was John Carpenter's The Thing.

The Thing is a great movie as are most of John Carpenters films. I especially love his soundtracks that he creates, even though they are simple they are very memorable.

I have to agree with Goof on this one. "The Thing", scared the hell out of me, and still does!

I'd agree that Carpenter's The Thing is one of the all-time best horror shockers out there -- for pure gore films indeed -- and it's by far one of the best remakes ever reimagined; it was a film that spooked the crap out of me as a kid, and it was so gory, I can recall just being "afraid" to pop the VHS tape in! That sequence with the doctor's head turning into the crab/spider creature and then walking away upside down is still one of the most frightful moments in horror cinema history. It still gets me. Rob B., Carpenter's creature guy, is simply brilliant.
