Free 'Heroes' HD DVD Bundled With Xbox 360 Add-On
Mon Oct 22, 2007 at 03:04 PM ET
Tags: Bundles, Xbox 360, Microsoft, Universal, Best Buy, Amazon (all tags)

Universal and Microsoft have teamed up to offer the 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD box set free with sales of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

The promo kicked off yesterday and is set to run for 1-2 weeks at select retailers. (So far, it has been spotted at Buy.com and at Best Buy.)

Combined with Microsoft's existing "Five Free Discs" offer and the free in-box 'King Kong' HD DVD (on select models), this latest incentive brings the value of all bundled HD DVD discs included with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on to roughly $220 -- that's forty dollars more than the total list price for the add-on itself.

Meanwhile, in a separate 'Heroes'-related Xbox 360 promo, Amazon.com is giving away 90 'Heroes' themed Xbox 360 game systems over the next 30 days. Sweepstakes winners will receive a special 'Heroes' decorated 20GB Xbox 360 Console with matching HD DVD add-on, plus a copy of 'Heroes: Season 1 on HD-DVD'. Click here for complete details.

That's a pretty sweet deal, I'd definitely be keen if I hadn't already bought the add-on!

It's worth buying the add-on just to get the Free HEROES + King King along with the 5 Free HD DVD movie deal even though you already have the add-on. You can always e-bay it or something, or sell HEROES on e-Bay also. For me the HEROES would make a great gift for a family member or friend

I don't know. I already have Heroes, the add-on and Kong. Furthermore, there's only two movies (Darkman and Aeon Flux) and the new 5 free movie deal that I don't already have.

I confess I was at BB yesterday and bought it but had buyers remorse and returned it today. I did try to wring those 2 free HD DVDs that they promised with 'any' HD DVD player, but they wouldn't budge, so that was the clincher and I returned it. Dude was rather a prick about it too and I didn't appreciate that at all ('...the way it is' is what he said and also he looked over real good and opened up my unopened add-on 'cause he thought I was trying something out of spite for not coughing up the two free movies).

Now I remember why I never go there anymore and bring my business to Amazon.

Perhaps if I was in the States it'd be different, but the 5 free HD deal doesn't apply here in NZ. I am looking to pick up HD Heroes though, it's due to release here shortly

Wow, we've had HEROES here in Canada for months now. Anyway, you can always e-bay stuff for top $ IMO. I think people buy HD DVD players, redeem the 5 free movies then sell them off for full price.

Yeah, we usually don't have such a big delay on titles here, but I'm still a massively early adopter by our standards.

For example, Spiderman 3 (DVD/BD) has been out here for perhaps a month now. It just varies from title to title.

As for HD DVD, it's only really starting to get into stores just now (I've found about 4 stores that now stock it, that previously didn't just in the past week). My faviourite retailer is www.gpstore.co.nz at the moment, they've had stock for quite some time, and always get in the new releases.

I'm hoping that with the release of Transformers on the 1st of November that more stores will take notice!

Of course, being an HD DVD fan means I can always order from Amazon etc thanks to region free

It's been pretty much all Blu-ray in Australia (and, I assume, New Zealand) until just recently, since retailers weren't carrying HD DVD. But with Transformers out, HD DVD is going to be kicking in a lot of doors.

Given that Transformers broke the first week sales record (formally held by the dual release 300), it's going to be hard for Blockbuster to not stock the top selling HD title of all time.

I agree.
If both HD Formats were equally advertized fairly then people would have a better option & decision on what they prefer & how much they are willing to spend. But it really looks like Sony got to many retailers and made exclusive deals with Blu-Ray unfortunately.

So, Paramount & DreamWorks going HD DVD exclusive was a must for HD DVD. Now with Transformers & Shrek the third followed by the earlier HEROES etc. HD DVD has more than a fighting chance regardless of Sony's payouts to retailers.

This Christmas Holiday Season, IMO, Transformers HD DVD will once again sell out like mad.

Why so much money? Even here in Canada you can pick it up for a nice $89 I would go onto e-Bay or Amazon to pick it up for cheaper IMO.

Actually, it's been pretty slow off the ground here, but I have to admit BD has had the most in store exposure. For example, I've been able to find BD movies in several retailers for a while now, and HD in just a handful. Whitcoulls, a large national bookstore has just got in a whole lot of BD films, however when talking with staff they've said how it's 'just new' and that they would in fact be getting HD DVD too, just at a later date. If I really want, I can make a special order for HD from them

Over the last couple of weeks though, I've seen HD titles cropping up in multiple stores. I haven't actually found anyone major that seems to be BD exclusive.

As for Heroes, the SD version has been out for a few weeks now at NZD$89-99, and the HD version is out here on November 7 for NZD$99 (~USD$75).
