This is the reason BD will never go main stream - no compatibility with DVD players. I've bought all kinds of HD DVD combos recently since the price is right. I haven't bought a BD in six months.

The only way around this for most people is if/when the BD players get so cheap they can replace most/all the SD DVD players in homes/cars. Until then, most people with younger kids are likely to not buy the HD version. I am sure some will buy them, and some will buy one or two then realize how limited the viewing will be and discontinue buying them in HD until the cheap players come.
This is a huge factor why I can not/will not buy into BD at this time. SD DVDs work everywhere, and my son does not care about PQ or SQ for those movies!

Crossgrading to BD is still a conscious action, and an additional pain in the butt that most people aren't going to want to bother with. Besides, the typical high-def husband isn't going to get a lot of support from anyone else in the house. DVD serves everyone just fine.

But husband is the man of the house, and should not let wife pussy whip him into enduring standard definition. Man should enforce High Definition on all of family for the good of their eyes.

If they waned Combo's to work, then they should have priced them like regular HD DVD only products. Myself, I never wanted SD content. SD allows relatives and neighbours to ask and borrow your movie collection. Since getting both Blu and HD DVD, I've been able to tell those who are too cheap to purchase their own, that it's incompatible with their 27", 4 x 3 format television and $29.00 special, Walmart DVD player. They would respect your property, as much as their A/V system, compared to your A/V system. In other words, use your media as coasters and frisbies. No thanks, Combo's do not work for me! Yeah, I sound like a snob, but my collection is intact.

thats fair enough really, I liked the "portability" of combos, I can take them to my girlfriends uni dorm or her parents house, my parents can watch it on their setup etc and it'll work in practically any laptop.

That won't be an issue in the slightest hopefully in a year or 2 tho. Because I'm getting a HDMI/Blu-ray enabled Vaio, so as long as wherever I want to watch the film has a HDTV, I'd be fine

Combos appeal to the masses because they were versatile - no combos no masses for HDM.

Let your wife on and have her endorse this statement.

I'm not married no woman controls me etc.

Nah I've already got my gf used to high def when we move in together, I've got her to the point where she knows Standard Def doesn't look as good so understands why they cost more

It isn't a wife that man needs to worry about, it is the kids. Wife will always lean towards kids. Would you as a father tell your little girl that since dad wants high def they will not be able to watch the movie in the car? Look into your kids eyes and tell them that, I dare you! I know in your case, Mike, that doesn't apply. But once you get married and have kids, that will change.

My kids won't have movies in the car anyway that sorta thing really hasn't taken off over here, but it costs a good $1000 to get an in car DVD player setup. We also drive tiny little micro machines compared to your monster trucks

Personally I'd be playing driving "games" with my kids on journeys rather than leaving them to watch a DVD. I have no doubt by the time I got to that stage, Blu-ray players would be sub £100 anyway so they'd have the player in the bedroom too, and I've already got 2 HDTVS though one of them is 19" and used as my PC monitor.

Did the same to my wife. I bought her a 15" LCD, four years ago for the bedroom, and hooked it up to HD satellite for her. I got her trained into believing that SD television is crap and so is SD DVD. She now only watches HD movies down in the dungeon, with or without me around. Ya gotta train'um from the beginning!
