LOS ANGELES --Marvel Entertainment said Tuesday that Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights in Japan and Spain for its upcoming "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk." SND/M6 has signed for France and Tele Munchen has agreed to handle Germany. Paramount has picked up Australia and New Zealand for the two films along with the next Marvel film.
Marvel previously announced that Paramount would distribute "Iron Man" while Universal will handle "The Incredible Hulk" in North America and all other international territories. "Iron Man" is set to open on May 2, 2008, and "Hulk" will launch a month later.
Marvel also announced Tuesday it's started borrowing from its previously announced $525 million credit facility to finance "Iron Man." The project had been set up at New Line, but Marvel reacquired the film rights in late 2005.
Robert Downey Jr. toplines as an inventor who dons a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero. Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges co-star with Jon Favreau helming. Lensing starts in Los Angeles on March 12.
Big, big news for Blu-ray. Both titles will be Region A for North American buyers and Region B in Spain for European users.

Well considering many of those titles are also on HD DVD not really a big deal and with teh way the FS and BB stores are dishing out new HD players in London after customers are coming in to exchange BR players because of the Paramount and Denon news BR may be in for a very rude awakening. Even the HT staff in both BB and FF stores across London are telling their customers to buy HD DVD for the certainty that all their movies will be compatibly with all players unlike the possability of the profile mishap that COULd afflict BR. I got to witness this twice in 2 days at 2 different stores in London it was great to see. It makes me chuckle when I walk into FS and BB stores and see a pile of openbox BR players from Sony and the rest sitting there and only 3 HD DVD players left in teh whole store. The guys I spoke with have had a 10-1 run this week alone of HD DVD players over Sony players not including the returns of the BR players and re purchase of HD DVD players.

Big news?

We're supposed to get excited about films that *haven't even been made yet*?

Yeah, well, if the current trend for Marvel is along the lines of Spiderman 3 (which was so bad I'm sorry I even watched it on a plane for the $3.00 headphone fee), eh, I'm *not* excited.

Short, frumpy Robert Downey Jr., as suave, debonaire Tony Stark? That's even worse than Michael Keaton as Batman--what are they thinking? Where's Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan when you need them?

Just 2 things I'd like to add:

1. Isn't it the Blu Ray Fanboy's argument that no one imports therefore foreign releases are moot?

2. Doesn't this completely piss on the "region free means we have to delay titles?" argument seeing as there are only 3 territories anyway.

I believe that while Paramount and Universal are both distributing thier own films in the USA, I guess that they'll use UIP for thier International Distribution.
