Default E mail reply I recieved from Blockbuster.

Please include the following line in all replies.
Tracking number: CT20070903_0000002244

Dear Valued BLOCKBUSTER Customer,

Thank you for your feedback regarding our decision to expand our Blu-ray inventory in more than 1,700 corporate-owned stores nationwide. Please note that this expansion will not impact the current inventory of HD-DVD titles in store or online. Blockbuster continues to carry HD-DVD in about 250 stores and also offers HD-DVD titles online.

While it is still too early to say which high-definition format will become the industry standard, we will continue to closely monitor customer rental patterns both at our stores and online, so we can adjust our inventory mix accordingly and ensure that Blockbuster is offering customers the most convenient access to the movies they want, in the format they want. That means in the future that we will add HD-DVD titles to additional stores.

Sincerely,
*****
BLOCKBUSTER Customer Care

I took out the persons name as last time I posted an e mail from a company they contacted me and asked me to remove their name so I am doing this before hand so as to not cause any problems.

That reply is really nothing. They already said that publicly. It is also BS because how can they monitor demand for HD DVD in stores they do not carry HD DVD in?

I just have no reason to switch from Netflix to Blockbuster online now so they lost a potential new customer in me, and I am sure a lot of other people who might have gone for that Total Access plan as i was going to.

I am sure a few people dropped BB Online for Netflix, but how many new customers will they NOT get because of it too?

I canceled my Blockbuster Online account and cited their refusal to provide equal exposure for HD DVD either online (buried in "collections" menu) and in the majority of their stores. No response.

Their response here is a joke. Let's see...
Quote:
we will continue to closely monitor customer rental patterns both at our stores and online
With 1700 stores carrying only BD discs, and BD having it's own main menu catagory in their online store and HD DVD there but hidden... what do you think their "customer rental patterns" will be? Overwhelmingly BD? That's like hiding a spaghetti dinner in the small print of a chinese resturant menu and then tracking the popularity of chinese vs. italian food with customers.

Blockbuster sucks right now. They should be offering at the least both HD DVD & Blu-Ray. But the way that email read they are Blu-Ray bias. Once people demand Transformers & Shrek the Third, there tune will change.

I sent them a reply stating how I felt they were actually alienating more customers than they were gaining/generating with this switch to BR especially with the recent Paramount Dreamworks decision to support HD DVD only I will post the reply once and if I recieve one.

If they have not already thought about that, they are more clueless than I realized! Or 'somebody' keeps sweetin' their pot.

I think the latter might be the case. However since bb does offer HD-DVD's via their online service, I wonder whether they will ever mention HD-DVD being available online. Either way, I think that the era of B&M movie rental stores may continue to decline as it just doesn't make that much sense as it used to before Netflix changed the way things are done.

The ironic thing from people leaving Blockbusters due to not treating HD DVD equally though, is that that means even less people are renting HD DVD from them, meaning they can and probably will quite happily and easily interpret that as even less demand in HD DVD.

But they are alienating the same consumers who also rent Standard DVDs. That's where it gets stupid IMO.
It would almost make more sense not to rent any HD at all. Then they could save twice as much.
I'm trying to think on their terms, and it's giving me a headache.

Yup, makes sense. Blockbuster is not very smart. I hope Netfix puts them in there place. They don't belong in the renting industry.

I never was a fan of blockbuster anyway. For local rentals I always used Hollywood video. I'm currently a Netflix user and will probably cancel that soon because I don't even have enough time to watch all the movies I own let alone rentals. No complaints with Netflix though their service is great. Blockbuster is only hurting themselves by limiting what they offer to the consumer like this.

I doubt BB cares about the HD DVD exclusivity of P/DW right now. Let's face it, the rentals of hi def disks are a fraction of a fraction of standard DVDs. They will have both Transformers and Shrek the Third on DVD and that is by far where the money is. The only thing that should give them pause is that every HD DVD supporter who has canceled their memberships will also not be renting regular DVDs.

I cant help but to find their answer ironic:

Quote:
While it is still too early to say which high-definition format will become the industry standard
They should add....however, we have made a choice to only carry one format despite there clearly being two competing formats at this time.

Yeah you bring up a good point that most of us including myself forget. DVDs are by far holding the lead and it will be that way for a while. Places like BB more than likely don't profit a whole lot from HD rentals anyway. I still believe that they should carry both formats, but to them its more than likely one of their lessor priorities.

I got an email saying they were removing "Blades of Glory" on Blu-Ray from my Que because Paramount is no longer supporting the format. Then there was a link provided to put the HD-DVD version in my que. hahaa. Well, maybe I'll get and HD-DVD player for Xmas or something.
