Arrow BD vs. HD DVD Replication Costs From Laser Pacific

I "borrowed" this from AVS and would like to thank xboxboi for getting the info:

Latest BD vs HD DVD replication cost: SL BD: $2.95, DL HD DVD: $2.09

A big thank you to Pacific disk for updating us on the prices:

http://www.pacificdisc.com/PricingHD-DVD.html
http://www.pacificdisc.com/PricingBluRay.html

Once of Paramount's foundation for announcing the dropping of Blu-ray Support and go HD DVD exclusive, replication cost.

according to the official quote:

A Single layer 25GB Blu-ray disk = $2.95
A double layer 30GB HD DVD = $2.09 (almost a $1 cheaper)

the above prices = equal at 100K still its 30GB for HD DVD and 25GB for BD.

What are these figures, merely the costs of the raw materials and energy? Does this include labor and the infrastructure built to make them in the first place?

I'm pretty sure it's just burning them... but it also costs studio money to program the menus in java for BD, and even troubleshoot them... while for HD DVD, they don't need programmers and no troubleshooting. Plus, from what I've read, Microsoft provides either free or very cheap VC-1 encoding as opposed to the money it takes to do MPEG-4.

These are the prices you pay to have your movie replicated. You (the studio) give them a Master Transfer Tape and a Glass Master(s) are created from it. The GM is used to stamp out the discs.

So when you ask . . "how much did this HD DVD or BD I am holding in my hand cost?" Here are the answers.

am I the only one who's actually noticed that for a 25,000 batch, Blu RAy is actually cheaper than DL HD DVD?

So how many BD films are on a 25GB versus HD DVD on a 15GB?

What about the; "Storage is King" mantra?

Anyway most new BD's are coming out on DL50's so there goes that comparison.

AFAIK, no one has ever disputed that DL 50GB BD-ROM is the most expensive read-only optical disc format out there.

Now you can see what it really costs from a third party where Sony isn't subsidizing the production on their own lines.

SL 25GB BD-ROM is a tiny bit cheaper then DL 30GB HD DVD? Imagine that. I bet SD DVD is even cheaper. The point would be?

I"ll admit that I support HD DVD over Blu-Ray, I don't dislike Blu-Ray and will probably purchase one when they are a finished product and their prices come down to a reasonable level, but I don't see how this information which everyone sort of knew already is in any way BS?

I think this info was posted because Obioman has been saying that BD25 is cheaper to make than HD30. It actually is true at ONLY the 25,000 quantity run where it is 0.04 cheaper but is more expensive on any other size run. Why this particular run is cheaper is a mystery to me.

It certainly shows that BD25 is more expensive as a general statement and David over at stated that his contact at the studios says the cost of BD50 is 50% more than HD30, and the Paramount reason for going back to HD DVD exclusive is partly because the Sony subsidy has ended on that additional cost. I think he believes the same is true for Warner too.

I wonder if Sony will quickly try to renew that offer to Warner to keep them from going back to HD DVD exclusive also?

Just so everyone know. The manufacturing process to make BD's has a much higher reject rate than for HD DVD's. This issue was brought up at AVS as just one of the reason why Paramount said BD's are more expensive to replicate.

So who gets charged for the misfires? The studio of course - the manufacturer is NOT going to eat it - that's for sure.

Unless the disc manufacturer is Sony.

What do you think a big part of their subsidy is? It covers the cost of rejects (that way they can hide the reject rate from the studios).
