I wouldn't be at all surprised--there's no technical hurdle as demonstrated by plans for laptops with built-in HD DVD.

The question is, is there any real need/demand for a portable HD DVD player with a tiny screen?

Ever watch a DVD on one of those? Ever watch your kids watch them while on vacation? My younger ones used to huddle around the damn thing like they never say a movie before.

Now we just bring a couple of laptops now.

Oh, portable *DVD* players are a great thing--with kids it almost seems the smaller the screen the more they like it.

But why HD? While I'm not one of those who says you can't see any difference between 720p and 1080p unless you sit up close to a huge screen, I'm pretty confident you would not see much difference between a Hi-Def image and a regular image on a sub-10" screen.

In fact, I'd be really surprised if the resolution of the screen was anywhere near 1920 x 1080 or even 1280 x 720--you might end up watching HD on a SD screen.

well on my 15.4 inch laptop i can really tell the difference between standard and hd so...
My guess is that the screens will be 10 inches it will be fairly low cost and it will include the free movie deal.

I guess so that you can watch newer releases you already own on HD DVD without "double dipping" for the SD version too seeing as Combo Discs havn't exactly caught on as some would have liked.

for combo discs to catch on they would need to be only 3 or 4 $ more than standard dvd.

I really hope this portable player isn't the only ace in toshiba's hole, cause if it is is isnt that important unless the player is under $250

The objective is for HD-DVD to replace DVD completely, meaning that they want people to buy HD-DVDs instead of conventional DVDs. That isn't going to happen unless there are portable players than can understand the HD-DVDs. Picture quality has nothing to do with it.

I agree, but, as I mentioned, I'm talking about consumer need and demand.

Unless a portable HD DVD player is as cheap as a portable SD DVD player, why would anyone buy one if there is no picture quality difference?

This sounds like it coincides with what a friend of mine who is the owner of a local GM dealer was saying about GM looking at putting HD DVD drives into GM vehicles. This could be a big issue for many people especially when so many people put them into their vehicles and not just the minivans anymore.

Wasn't there an announcement already for an HD DVD player by Toshiba designed to go into a car in place of a DVD player. I remember it but can't find it.

That would be 7" screens built into head rests or a 10" drop down screen for like a minivan.

Color me doubtful this will ever take off. But the first portable DVD players were around $600. Who knows?

I agree...just keep using a portable DVD player since you can't tell the difference at that size.

As I say, I think it's more for people like me who have a large catalogue of HD DVD titles that they do not own on SD DVD. It eliminates the "double dip" factor and allows me to play ALL my optical media movies on the go.

Personally I couldn't care less about it mind, I watch my movies in my home hooked up to my 5.1 system with the lights turned down.

I suppose it's another potential factor though, "our car has that HD DVD player... so lets get one of them for the home instead of that Blu Ray thingy that way the kids can watch films in the car too!.

I suppose they're just trying to flood alternative channels to compensate for Sonys strong Blu Ray penetration of the gaming market.

I hope so, I'm TIRED of low-res. (800x480!!??) portable DVD players!!!

I hope it has a slot-load drive & a 10.2 inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1280!!
