Disney Announces Four Classics for 2008

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the scheduling of four classic movies coming to Blu-ray in 2008, all featuring the latest in Blu-ray interactivity. Coming Spring 2008 is 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' which will be the first Disney title to use the Picture-In-Picture feature of upcoming Blu-ray players. Summer 2008 will see the release of 'National Treasure' which will be the first Disney title to use Internet connectivity. In the Fall, Disney will release 'Finding Nemo' and the first Platinum title on Blu-ray, 'Sleeping Beauty'.

'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe', which was delayed from this fall, seemingly due to the delay of Profile 1.1 implementation, will feature full motion Picture-In-Picture extras. 'Finding Nemo' will also get the Picture-In-Picture treatment when it gets released next fall.

'National Treasure' will be the first Disney title to use BD-Live, which allows viewers to connect to the Internet via their Blu-ray player to download additional content, as well as play games with other viewers. The release of 'Sleeping Beauty' will also get BD-Live treatment, and the extras will include a virtual castle and multi-player games.

'Sleeping Beauty' will be the first title given the "Platinum" treatment. Commenting on the significance of Platinum titles, Bob Chapek, President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment said, "The Platinum titles are the crown jewels of the Disney Studios and we do not take releasing them lightly on any format. The proven Blu-ray technology has allowed us to take our films to new heights, fully utilizing the larger capacity and interactive capabilities for an incredible all-new consumer experience."

So how are the owners of the Sony S300 going to see these new BD Live features? You know it doen't have an Ethernet Port. Hey for that matter none of the current BD players have the hardware requirements for Profile 2.0 which is BD Live.

Guess it's only for the PS3 owners.

The only classic I can see on there is Sleeping Beauty?

Me was hoping for Lion King or something

They're also a bloody long way away, the earliest release is over months away, then 8 months and over 12 months away for the other 3 >_< why are they announcing these now?

Wow, very cool. Nemo should look incredible. Sleeping Beauty should also look great, the standard DVD is really outstanding

I'll give you 3 guesses why it was announced now and the other 2 don't count

I watched Finding Nemo SD version the other day and cannot see it could look much better in HD. I am sure it will look a bit better but I was floored buy the look of it upconverted!

Sleeping Beauty - one of the very few animated films made in 70mm. But they are using 35mm elements to transfer films to HDD so far. All the WB 70mm films were dubbed down to 35mm to transfer:

Grand Prix
Mutnity On The Bounty
Battle Of The Bulge

Exactly why none of this excites me besides the mere fact that there is going to be even more content. I wonder if my s1 will be worth anything to anyone here in the near future. The next gen profile 2.0 players more than likely will be getting released by year end by everyone right?

Well they have yet to announce a 1.1 player with the exception of the Denon so your guess is as good as mine.

Two things are needed for 2.0 - an ethernet connection and 1 GB of Persistent Storage.

Finding Nemo is the greatest movie ever made. Its a flat out masterpeice. Its only a shame we have to wait till 2008. Also Sleeping Beauty being the first animated classic means that Jungle Book will be a DVD only release which is pretty outragous.

I agree.

Samcan's comment about Jungle Book make it 2 classics.

Whooooohoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up with The Jungle Book. Hopefully since The Jungle Book was animated intended for both 1.33 and 1.77 theaters both aspect ratios should be included. Since the movie is only 78 minutes long both versions should easily fit on one BD-50 with plenty of room for extras.

Are 2.0 and BD-live the same thing?
