Shouldn't I be able to save $$ and get a decent 7.1 HDMI receiver instead of the Onkyo Tx 605 that I have been thinking of?
The 605 is around $400, I don't know how much lower you could go than this and still call something decent. I have never liked the lower($200ish) priced offerings in the receiver department The 805 is currently $730 and should be seriously considered if it would fit in your budget.

I've seen some nice deals on the Yamaha 1700($587)/2700.

I think if you are interested in a BD player, you WILL need a HDMI 1.3a receiver with the HD audio decoders built into the receiver. This is a different viewpoint since CES where the majority of 1.0 BD players were at least including DtHD decoding in the players. It appears they are going back to Plan A of trying to get everyone to buy a new receiver again since almost all the reported BD players coming out will only pass the HD bitstream for the receiver to do the decoding again.

In the OP's post, it mentions that movies with "advanced" audio authoring will require the decoding of the next-gen codecs in the player.

So to clarify, if an HD-DVD or Blu-ray movie uses advanced audio authoring, and the player passes the bitstream over HDMI to a receiver that can decode the next-gen codec, the audio won't play? Is this really true, because that seems a bit messed up.

I currently own the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on, so I obviously don't have any opportunity to listen to next-gen codecs. However, my plan this year is to buy a Blu-ray player and the Onkyo TX-605. I wasn't going to worry about which codecs the player decoded (such as DTS-MA) because the Onkyo can decode them all via bitstream. But if certain discs are going to have issues, this obviously concerns me.

Bump... can anyone clarify this?
